I'm talking about the fancier stuff - the Lenox, Villeroy, Wedgewood ... not the microwave and dishwasher safe stuff you eat from every day. Do you plan to use it weekly? Once a month? Once a year?

I've posted a similar question in the Marriage/Divorce section because I'm curious to know how often married couples actually use their "nice" china.

I already have a set of fine china that I use a few times a year--but I expect to use it more when we move to our home this summer because entertaining now is tough in a tiny apartment. We got Villeroy to use as our everyday dishes even though its china because in all honesty, I absolutely adore china! I think it gives a special air to any meal, and if you think of it, people usually only break out the china when there's a special occasion, so it's associated with special family times. I love that. We also are getting a 12 person set of Wedgewood that was his grandmother's when we move. I'd love to have 10 sets of china. It's probably the one thing I really go wild over in a house. I know that's not very common, but hey, to each her own!

We have yet to use ours. We don't have a dining room and no china cabinet so it is in its original boxes in our storage room. We've been married over a year and it will be 2 years before we move into a house with a dining room.

At that time, hopefully we will be able to get the family to come visit for Thanksgiving. I'll break it out for birthdays and anniversaries (assuming we don't go out to eat on those occasions). Umm perhaps I can have friends over monthly or for special events and use it (that's what my mother does).

But seriously I'm guessing 1-2 times a year. And ONLY if you actually have a china cabinet so that it is easy to access. If it takes you some time, you'll never use it.

We got some semi nice china that we're using mostly every day and for nice dinners. I also had a set of dishes from before we were married that we use sometimes too. I think even if we had really nice china we'd use it a lot. What's the point of having something if you're not using it. We normally eat at a very nicely set table for everyday meals. Half the fun of eating is sitting at a pretty table and that should happen as much as possible.

I'm getting married in a while and if we got we fine china for a present I would be happy but also sad....
I would be happy b/c someone got us somethign really nice and from the heart, but i would be sad b/c I know i would only use it maybe once a year....
I would either be too afraid that i would break a dish or something like that....
or we just wouldn't have an occasion to use the china...we don't hold many home gatherings...so it would be kind pointless for use to have fine china...
my MIL has a set though from their wedding, and she uses hers quite a bit...every holiday, or small family event, she brings it out.

We have been married just under a year. We plan to use it twice a year, on Thanksgiving and Christmas. We also bust out two place settings on occasion when we have a romantic dinner together at home, on anniversaries and such.

So using the whole set, 2 times a year. Using a couple pieces, 2-3 times a year.

I've been married for 2 1/2 years and it looks very pretty in my china cabinet, but I haven't used it. My husband bugs me about it and I think on a random weeknight I am going to make us a nice dinner and break it out with the crystal. I thought I would use it at Christmas but I was given christmas dishes so I kind of feel obligated to use them at Christmastime. And we don't do Thanksgiving or Easter at our house so I have no idea when I will use it.

Until a few years ago, I used it for holidays and birthdays, I don't give other dinner parties, just family things.
When we got up to fifteen at the table I stopped. When we had larger parties, like for thirty-five or more, we went to plastic, as much as that hurt.
I do display it in my hutch in the dining room, and it looks as lovely as it did back in 1978 when it was new.
Fine china is a lot tougher than earthenware.
For everyday, with kids and grand kids you can't beat Corelle.
I have some thats forty years old.
Using it makes the occaision special, even if its my grandsons birthday.
Mine is Royal Doulton, the Kingswood pattern

Unless you entertain lavishly on a monthly basis, good china is a waste. Most cannot be put in dishwasher, just think of yourself in the kitchen washing up while your guests are in the next room having fun.Do you have the space to put it out all the time, or do you have to keep it in boxes??i would recommend you buy two sets of dishes, one all white and the other colour of your choice. If flowered be sure there is some white in it.These dishes will go with everything.Change tablecloth to different colours and you have a whole new theme.

The only person that has China in my family is my grandmother. I have never in my 28 years seen her use it. It sits in the hutch. No one else even registered for it for that reason. Plus. I like to change my plates out every few years. Can't do that with million dollar china! I guess if your guests can afford it it would be a nice heirloom.

I am not even registering for china because I know we will never use it. I have only seen my mother use hers 2 or 3 times in my life, the rest of the time it sits in a fancy display cabinet. What a waste.
