Hi I have a 11 week old siberian husky and he has had diarrha off in on for the past 2 days (I think he got into the cat food and ate some rocks)My vet has prescribe some Forti Flora for him and it's only working a little bit to harden his stools. I'm afraid that he will get dehydrated and playing with ice from the fridge has lost some interst to him, he is drinking, but I'm not sure if it's nearly enough (doesn;t seem as much as usual) He is still energetic and is vaccinated up to date. I have read online to intise a dog to drink water is to add chicken broth in the water, but I haven't found anything if it is ok for puppies. Thank you for your imput!

Low sodium or better yet homemade chicken broth is fine.

NOOOOo well if your talking about loke OXO bullion broth -- homemadechicken broth etc ? Store bough ( human broth) is loaded with salt = VERY bad for your pets home made chicken broth isn't to bad in small doses -not often but itis fatty so strain it first Plus why would you want to ? kibble is krunchy for a reason & helps clean the dogs teeth - softening it with broth only defeats the purpose of the crunchiness

I wouldnt see why not. Chicken broth isnt going to hurt a dog or a puppy. Another way to try to keep him hydrated is give him wet food. You can either give him canned wet food, or even better is to soak the hard food so it will absorb the water. Keep out for signs that he might be dehydrated (sluggish, pale gums, skin that stays taunt when pinched/pulled). If any of these apear, take him to the vet to get some IV fluids.

My vet said that either chicken or beef broth are not good due to the high sodium.
You might want to get some puppy replacement formula or goats milk this may help.

Try boiling some rice(preferably brown) with ground chicken.
The rice's gluten will work as a binding ingredient for the stools and the chicken will be a good direct source of protein.
You can mix it with some dry kibble with some water to make a kind of mush. He'll love you for it and you should see a firmer stool quickly.

Me personally would not add broth to water for a puppy or adult dog. Try mushing his food in water.

If the broth contains no salt or fat, a spoonfull to a cup of water is OK if the dog is dehydrated. Test for dehydration by pinching the dog's skin and seeing how fast the skin goes back flat. Dehydrated dog skin keeps the bent shape longer. If the dog is dehydrated, then do the broth.

My Vet. says to never give ice to a dog unless it has heat stroke. They can choke on it, the cold upsets the digestive system and kills beneficial flora.

Use Pedialite. It has the electrolytes that your pup needs. Chicken broth may upset his tummy more at this point. Hydration is key at this point.

Make sure there is no onion, garlic in these broths! And they can have a mix of 1tsp salt, 1tbs honey or sugar to a quart of warm water and dissolve. For example give to a 5 lb dog 4-5 tbs over the course of a day til the dog is drinking again on its own.

no i would not put it in the water. If he was dehydrated the vet would have said so. If you think he is anyway call the vet and ask to bring him in. He will drink only what he wants. he if is up moving around and eating then do not worry about it.
