My kitten was adopted from a shelter about three weeks ago. At the time they estimated her age to be 5 weeks approximately. So now at approximately 8 weeks she weights 1.81 pounds. What should a kitten her age weigh in pounds? I don't understand grams and all the online weight charts I have seen post it in metrics.

Thanks! She was checked before she was adopted out by a local vet. I frankly was surprised by how much she has grown in 3 weeks. The shelter said one of her brother only weighs a little over one pound....I thought maybe she was big for her age. She is adorable though.

your vet should be able to tell you this. so when you take her to the vet this week, you can ask.

There's no way to say how much a kitten, or a cat of any age, should actually weigh - there's too much variation in size. 1.81lb might be skinny for one 8 week old kitten, and fat for another! It sounds about average to me though.
You have to go by shape of an animal to determine if it's the right weight. A cat should have a nice obvious waist, but you should not be able to see the ribs, or the spine or hips sticking out. A vet can always tell you if your kitten is a healthy weight.

i remember that i took my cat to the vet at 6 months and she was about 5 lbs... so your cat being around 1.81 lbs for a 2 months is probably around where the kitten should be... they gain most of their weight according to my vet around 4-7 months.. so i would fret too much about it just make sure it eats all the time... Also if you adopted it from a shelter it is already pre-checked for worms and things like that that would cause it to be low in weight... so i wouldnt worry too much about it.

Call your vet to get the proper estimations on weight. But most likely should weigh around 2 lbs.

The easiest way to tell, rather than actual numbers, is to feel your cat. If you feel the spaces between the ribs and you can feel their hip bones and chest plate, your cat might be too thin. Granted, cats are generally lean animals, so you should be able to feel them, but at a normal weight, its not just bone to skin, you can feel a layer of muscle or fat in between.

Well, generally kittens gain about a pound a month.....I think your kitten is right on track. Don't worry.....if eating, drinking, peeing and pooping, sounds like its doing ok.
