there is plenty of crime in NY to spend their ridiculous resources on sting operations. Ethical? we can all agree that the best thing to do is to return the wallet..theft? thats a bit too much. Finders keepers, losers suck..thats the way life works. If the people got together and put and end to such none sense and waste of money instead of paying for other departments that might need that money, i think they could see it through.

It is not ethical for the cops to charge you with theft for picking up a wallet. Same goes for taking it and not giving it back. That might have been all of the Christmas money a family had (This time of the year) for this year. That would be rather crappy of someone to steal from little kids.

In many states it is theft. Theft of mislaid or lost property. A reasonable person would turn the wallet and cash in to the authorities.

It clearly is NOT ethical to just take the wallet & cash and not turn it in.

I would think a sting of that nature would border entrapment. If I saw a wallet or purse unattentded out in the open I would pick it up and turn it in to lost and found or attorities but if i thought i was to be arrested for simply picking it up I would not touch it and let it be stollen. So I would consult an attorney if you were charged in such a case.

I am not a legal expert, but it should be theft and is definitely not ethical to keep the money. If someone loses their property you should try to help them get it back. It is just the right thing to do. If there is no way to find the owner of the property then that is different, but if you have their name and address then you must contact them.

it is theft if you dont return it. its ethical to a point where they want to find theives.

you really cant complain about that because if it were your wallet that you forgot behind and someone else came through and picked it up and didnt return it that would be theft. sure youd be mad about it.

I think if you can return it and don't, it is kinda theft. Especially when there's money in there you can use to mail it back to them. But the sting operation is a total waste of their time and are wasting our tax payers money. I find it hard to believe they do this. A source would be nice if you have one.

Would it be ethical, or theft, if it was YOUR wallet? Yeah, I thought so!

It's referred to as possession of stolen or mislaid property.
