Congratulations. Parenting is challenging and full of countless opportunities. I would recommend a crib because toddler bed or crib that turns into a bed is short lived at best. Children grow at an amazing rate, one day you are feeding them, then they are walking & talking and then its off to school. My childern were both excited about picking out there own beds when the time came. It's part of the transition of when the child is mentally ready to move from infant / baby to child / toddler. More importandly prepair yourself for the privladge of parenting, yes I said privlidge. You have been blessed with a great proviladge of being a parent, even though you will find that you may not always have the answers of what should i do now. Dont sweat the small stuff like cribs or beds, a home filled with Love rules the day.

If it saves you the cost of a toddler bed, then go for it. The majority of people that I have known with convertibles want a twin sized bed once their toddler is big enough for it. They never really get the full benefit and sell the bed (craigslist has had many convertible beds that were only used a few years). Every convertible I have seen goes to a daybed and a full-sized bed. The Graco toddler bed is less than $50, so it may not actually be a savings. On the other hand, it would certainly work to turn it into a bed for guests once baby is in a twin or if you really want a full sized bed.
The other problem is what do you do for the next child? Buy another $400 convertible crib?

I did because I thought it just made sense...now that my son is almost 2 1/2 I realize that I didn't need to buy a convertible crib at all. When you convert the crib to a toddler bed you can't use the bed rails that you buy at the store so they don't fall out. You can only use those with a mattress and box springs. So after your little one is out of the crib you'll need to buy another bed for them anyway. I wouldn't be set on buying a convertible crib. I would pick out the crib you really really want and get that one. It it converts it converts, and if it doesn't it doesn't.
Good luck and congratulations on your little bundle of perfection!!
***EDIT*** I see a lot of other people telling you that is saves you money, but it doesn't...as I said already, the toddler bed/day bed that it converts to isn't exactly "safe" as you can't use the bed rail with it so the little one will fall out of bed onto the floor. Once your child is in a full size bed (if you even have enough room in their bedroom for a full size mattress) then you use one piece of the crib as the head board. ALSO keep in mind that if you get a convertible crib and use it as a toddler/day bed and full size bed, then when you have any other children you'll have to buy another crib.

They seem to be a great idea and there are some attractive ones available, but remember that you will have to buy new mattresses as the bed expands. Another alternative to the traditional crib is one made by Ikea two thirds the size of the usual model. My daughter has had one of these for her second child and loves it as it has fitted easily into her bedroom whilst she has wanted the baby close at hand and was actually so much cheaper than many full sized cribs that the first bed will cost no more than she saved.
The smaller size is great even when baby is in his or her own room because there is extra space for things like changing tables...

They are great but didn't work out for my first child. He's a big kid and such an active sleeper that the toddler size bed (still the crib mattress size) was too small but we didn't have the heart to put him in the full size bed it also converted to so we ended up buying a twin bed/mattress for him. Of course, we have a second child and were able to re-use the crib with him so it all worked out.

i bought a 4 in 1... im excited for it just because you dont have to buy a crib, then a toddler bed, then a twin bed.. you have a crib and it can now be used forever because you can use it as a head board foot board for a double bed after you are done with using it as a day bed, or toddler bed (3 in 1)

Oh heck yeah. Its a better investment, theyre better made, and they look better. not to mention theyre more sturdy.
ours turns into a toddler bed, and then into a full size bed. THe thing weighs like 100 pounds, so its solid and safe.
I love it.
We paid just under 500 for ours, i watched to sales (this is the best time of year for them as the 08 stuff is coming out.) for a decent regular crib is like 300... so really its a better investment.

It depends on how much of a "decorate then redecorate" person you are. If you don't mind working with the same theme or style for several years, it will serve you well.
We used a crib first then a separate youth bed, because my hubby wanted a special "race car" bed for our little guy. Nothing like a NASCAR dad to help with the decorating choices. *L*

It will save you money down the road. We have one that transitions from crib, to toddler daybed and then a full sized bed. If you have the room for a FS bed later on...why not. You will only have to buy the mattress and boxspring later on.

I would think it would be a better bet in the long run, However if you have it for one child you'll have to get anther one for the next as the first child will still be using his. But I thinks its a great idea that someday his/her child will be sleeping in the same bed they slept in as children. Congrats on the baby and I hope you have a very healthy and happy baby.
