He stole it from a relative and yes there ares some states that still allow you to purchase assault weapons...Nevada is another state I know...but in California..it is a felony to own one and many other restricted weapons.....you cannot even own a clip that holds more than 9 rounds....even if you move here and you already own one you have to turn it in within 5 days or face felony weapons charges.

You can get an AK-47 type gun anywhere in this country. I myself have a WASR-10, the Romanian variant of the gun and pretty sure that Hawkins had that as well due to its price.
The gun is basically a semi-automatic rifle, NOT AN ASSAULT RIFLE, however that does not take anything away from its lethal force. As it is just a rifle, it can easily be obtained over the internet or at any store with just a simple FBI background check.
Now another interesting aspect that will come up is the magazines or clips that can be used now with the AK 47. The gun's standard clip is the 30 round mag, however as there in no longer any ban on hi-caps, one can also get 40-100 round mags.
Guns are by far not the problem. Its still a mystery how a lunatic like Hawkins was even allowed to live.
May all those 8 people RIP.

The one I seen was not an AK it was a Chinese SKS kind of the same but not really.
Being a convicted felon he did not buy it at a gun store and if he did the owner needs to be charged with murder because he failed to do any kind of background check and that is a violation of the law. (I am a die heard gun owner).
In reality the ak-47 is not all that powerful. The 7.62x39mm cartridge is sort of a weakling in the shooting world.
This is not a failing of gun control laws this is a failing of criminal control laws. We do not help these people we just punish them and put them back on the street.
He was a convicted felon who was mentally unstable from drugs and who knows else. Why was he even allowed to be around firearms in the first place?
This is not the fault of the gun a gun is a hunk of metal and either wood or plastic. It has to be acted upon by an outside force to work. That outside force needs to be a human.
He broke many different laws to do this. One the mass was a "GUN FREE ZONE" but he brought a gun. Two he was a convicted felon who was in possessions of a firearm. Three He did not have a CCW Permit but he had to conceal the firearm from view to get it in there. Four He more than likely loaded the firearms before driving to the mall that is transporting a loaded firearm and is illegal in most states.
So to say we need more gun control is really a mute point because if a person is going to break one law then why would four or five laws stop them? IT WOULDN'T. That is the fundamental flaw in the Anti-gun debate.
I bet you he bought this off of another criminal. Because birds of a feather flock together.

Literally where is it that he couldn't have gotten it. The (AK-47) is a military rifle, already illegal to own publicly. Therefore it is obtainable through black markets. This is why gun control will and does not work, lets remember the gun has no mind of its own. The method used is that of the person he just happened to use the AK 47 as a tool, he could have done it many different ways.

The gun grow to be criminal. the venture is that maybe if the guy had some wish in his existence and grow to be no longer homeless he does no longer have executed what he did. Out in the midwest and the heartland, exceedingly plenty each teen age boy it somewhat is in to searching has an SKS... Any gun avert can purchase one. i think in gun administration even if it extremely does no longer make any diffrence what form or variety of gun he used. surely in allot of states you could carry a gun in the open in public locations. in the previous west maximum human beings carried a gun on the hip, it grow to be prefectly criminal... a lot of those regulations are nonetheless on the books. I return and forth allot threw the Dakotas, Neb, MT WY CO and it isn't any longer suprising to verify some one sporting an element arm.

It's actually not that hard to find and buy guns like these. Which is pretty sad, and to answer your question, Robbie stole the gun from his former stepdad's (Mark Dotson) house.

AK-47's are readily available at gun stores and gun shows. (BTW gun show usually don't, and aren't required to do background checks)
The Brady Bill stopped import of new ones and banned large clip 30+ rounds but the Republican Congress repealed that a few years ago.
