It's positive and negative.

Religions do some good and a lot of bad. They are, admittedly, better than many other groups at getting people organized to help other people. They are also good at organizing people to be intolerant, bigotted, and violent towards other people.

But most people are religious, so they tend to emphasize only the good things. At the same time, they tend to minimize any good done by non-religious people.

Religion can be and is a very positive emotional aid to some that are looking for it.

Others find a very negative message that gives them reason to find fault with everything

There is a different religion to fit the many human personalties.

People go shopping for a religion to make them feel comfortable or miserable, whatever fits.

Birds of a feather flock together.

The world would be a better place without religion & religion
is a negative not positive thing.
Religion is man trying to reach God, but originally it was God
in a relationship with man.YHWH God wants relationship &
so He reached out to man in Yeshua, when the bond was
broken in the Garden of Eden.
A relationship with God is what is needed & that is a positive
& beautiful thing.

Religion, and being religious, is only positive when its message is one of love, tolerance, and helping all of mankind regardless of race, age, gender, etc ...

Its when people mix in doom and gloom and think their view is more righteous then others that it goes down hill fast ...

EDIT - You can have a world without religion and a belief in a higher power ... Religion is a bout a path to get to that higher power .. it does not represent that higher power ...

I think it's positive and negative. some of the negative aspects are that we fight and argue over everything, and many kill in the name of their religion thinking that's what god wants. but how many people do you think would perform more evil acts if they did not have the goal of heaven waiting for them, or know that god is watching and they will be judged? most morality comes from a religious definition of right and wrong. if no one thought it made any difference if they sinned or not, how many would commit more crimes? just something to think on there....

It's enlightening to see so many well-versed & enthusiastic responses to this question already. Obviously religion and relationship to God is important to world events ... even to those of us who profess NOT to believe. But everyone believes in SOME kind of religion, even if your god is the prince of darkness or that new Cadillac Seville you desire to relate to.
So before you disavow the importance of God Yaweh ... the God of the Bible, consider that it was this eventual total breakdown in the relationship to God - or the lack of religion if you prefer, that brought about the need for the great flood. (Assuming we are to believe that the flood occurred).

And this system of belief in our respective gods ... disruptive though it may be, actually unites us in many respects, but also gives purpose for the very existence of mankind on earth in the first place.

Your question is based on an opinion. Presenting your opinion as fact tells me you already have your mind made up and you are merely baiting those whose opinion differs from yours. Assuming your opinion were fact then being religious would not necessarily be a positive thing.

Being religious is neither positive or negative, its just being religious. What you do with your religion can be positive or negative for the human species.

You're engaging in the logical fallacy commonly known as "begging the question" or "assuming the answer".

It is by no means established that being religious is a positive thing.

That's a pretty bold, unprovable assertion.

What evidence do you have that the world as a whole would actually be better without religion?
