You should always give a tip when someone is providing you with a service. Having someone give you a tattoo is a pretty huge service and tipping should reflect that. I always tip based on the level of service. Did the tattoo artist make you feel comfortable? Did they answer all your questions and ask you questions about your tattoo? And in the end, how was your experience overall?
I just recently had a tattoo and the tattoo itself cost $106 and was on the middle of my back. I tipped the artist $50 because she made me feel comfortable and at ease about the whole process. The tattoo turned out great and I love it and will be going back!
Usually the norm is 10-15%. But take into account the size and detail of your tattoo when leaving a tip.

My husband is a tattoo artist! All I hear in the responses is how expensive tattoos are! You should look at the price of the equipment! For my husband to just get enough to get started: his equipment was $1250!!!
Do you guys complain about a cosmetologist, they are really freaking expensive!
But to answer your question, there is not a set percentage to tip them! But yes tips ensure a great future relationship with your artist!!!

I always tip my artist, but I don't go based on a percentage. I go based on the job that they did, how comfortable they made me feel, how well they explained aftercare. (Even though I have tattoos, I always like when an artist covers the aftercare again, because every artist tells you different tips.) For example, my first small tattoo cost me $60, and I tipped $15 because he made me feel comfortable while I got it done. My latest tattoo cost me $150 and I tipped him $40. So it depends on the level of service you felt you got. And remember that the cost of the tattoo is not only based on the supplies that they use for your tattoo, but also the time they spend "crafting" it.

I always tip my tattoo artist out of courtesy and appreciation. Depending on the size and cost of the tattoo, I usually tip between 15-20%. But as long as I like how they treated me and liked the tattoo, I always tip something.

Yes, you tip your artist. It is not built in. We tip 20%. If you ever want another tattoo by that artist, or touch up, it's always good to make them happy and have a good relationship. It pays off in the end.
You tip waiters, hairdressers, valets, why in the world would you not tip someone putting permanent art on your body?

The first time I got a tattoo I walked into the shop and sat down and there was a sign there saying "Tip or die". Kind of struck a cord with me. :) My tattoo cost $80, and I gave the guy $20. The second one cost me $60, I think.. and I gave him $10. It all depends on you. Give him what you can, he'll appreciate it, i'm sure. Money is money! :)

You have to realize that the artist splits the fee with the studio. Tips are customary in the 15-20% range provided you had good service.
I generally do not get tipped as the studio owner.

Yes, you are. Although, I am not sure of the ammount/percentage. The lowest I have heard of was $15. I would also like to know the percentage.

DUH-UH! Do you tip your hairstylist? Do you tip your waitress? They are doing you a service. They rent their spaces and have to pay the studio owner.
