What a tough question! For me, any city where I have friends, and any other city where I might make new friends...While I truly enjoy the physical scenery, what makes me go back to China are the people I know there and the certainty that I will make new friends...

I'd rather be in ugly Shenyang in winter having a hot pot with my friends than being alone in beautiful Shangri-La...

This being said, I love HK most as a city...

Xi'an- the Terra Cotta Warriors are amazing. Check out the Muslim area for shopping.
Beijing-The Great Wall at Mu Tian Yu (avoid Ba Da Ling)
The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace
Chengdu-the main breeding center for pandas is here.
Suzhou-Venice of the East. Lots of gardens and canals.

Hangzhou, 2 hours south of Shanghai. DEFINITELY go there.

It's considered the most beautiful city in the world (Marco Polo was one of the first people to think so), and it is. I had a *horrible* time in China and the only time I truly enjoyed myself and saw China as the beautiful country it touts itself to be was when I was in Hangzhou. If you have some extra spending cash, stay at the Hyatt on West Lake. It's super cheap compared to other Hyatts and it's the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in. The pool is magnificent and all the employees speak great English!

Beijing, Nanjing and Xian are the cities for people who like Chinese history.
Hangzhou and Suzhou are good for their landscaping and scenery.
For vacation, I think Chengdu is the city, there are so many interesting places around.
There are many more. I have been to all of the above and I know I will go back again sometime.

Hong Kong.
The city of the East.
Haven't been there.

Beijing, yes, and a lot of other exotic places, not necessarily cities. But Hong Kong is legendary. That's where I'd head.

I have been to quite a few and my favourite is Hangzhou. It has a huge and beautiful lake and the inhabitants there are friendly and easy-going.Hangzhou is not as commercialized like other big cities in China and I like the vegetable - Chun Chai, there.
