yes, if the big dog had been raised around cats then definitely. As a rule, even huge dogs like Mastiffs, if raised with cats, will screw with the cat once and get a sharp claw to the nose. Generally the dog learns that "this little cat hurts me and makes me bleed if I get too close, I better stay away"
This is how they can coexist. A dog raised with no cats will not back down from a cat... and generally this is how cats end up dead.

All our cats, all through have never feared dogs. Any attempt to come near would end up with a torn nose for the dogs. They the dogs have always run away. Dogs are no match for the sharp claws of cats.

Actuallly I've heard of stuff like that happening alot. I even had an experience once when I was laying on the floor laughing because i had lost something. My dog pinned me to the ground next thing i know is that all my cats (at this time i had 2) started attacking the dog.

My stafforshire bull terrier dog was attacked by a mad moggie for no reason! This cute-looking ball of fluff pounced on his back and the poor dog crapped himself and legged it! I was laughing so much I could hardly stand up. Since then my dog would not past that house. He is gone now, he was such an old softie and that memory always makes me laugh again. As far as I know the cat is still terrorising the local dogs

Sounds like your cat is very protective of you; an obvious sign of affection. Some cats just aren't afraid of dogs. I used to have a female cat that would hop the fence, and pick a fight with the neighbors German Shepherd. We got a lot of complaints about that one (as well as a lot of threats), although the neighbors never did anything.

I'm sure it isn't that unusual. A cat with claws can do some serious damage to a dog's sensitive nose. What's really unusual is the cat that chased a bear up a tree....twice.

Aww your kitty loves you. It must be pretty impressive to scare off a dog. Never heard of that before. But I had a cat that would sit back on his hind legs and repeatedly swat the dog in the face. It was so funny. :)

Sure, they do it all the time. My sister has an evil cat that has all our dogs scared of her. She's a small cat, prob 4-5 lbs. but 2 coonhounds, a bulldog and a over 110lb Komondor are all afraid of her when we're at her house.

Honestly, cats are pretty tough and although big dogs are scary, they can tend to be the biggest babies sometimes. My cat will chase any animal out of our yard no matter what the size. Cat's are territorial and if you spend alot of time with your cat it could see you as it's territory. I'd take it as a compliment.

I had a cat that was mean and chased off anything in the yard dogs, racoons and he caught my neighbors tiny dog and brought it home in his mouth. I thought he killed it. but the dog was ok. and always ran away from my cat.
