Every time I go to the mall there are these people selling lotions and Dead Sea products and they are super pushy. If you are walking by they try to physically guide you over so that they can buff your nails or rub lotion on your hands. Maybe they are instructed to accost customers by their managers, but it irritates the hell out of me. If I wanted lotion, I know where to find some. Now, I know it is just their job, but I wouldn't work at a job that forced me to bother shoppers. What are your opinions on this?

Let me clarify- Not all kiosk people are like this, not even most. I am just annoyed with the ones that pester shoppers.

Skyblue- I love what you told the cell phone vendors! That's hilarious! They must have thought you were nuts!

To those who say it is just their job, I am aware of this fact and that is why I stated such in my question. There are other jobs available to these people. They choose to do this job and therefore are not blameless.

I had that experience several weeks ago. I'm not usually one to get sucked into these kind of sales tactics, but I did; and I actually bought the dead sea kit with the nail buffer and lotion. I couldn't believe that I had allowed myself to get into that situation, and I was so, so mad at myself that I had reinforced their super annoying behavior by buying their product. I don't even want to go near the place now. If I feel this way, I'm sure others do too; in which case, the surrounding store owners and civil kiosk vendors will be losing business because of the crazy aggressive sales people. I think the mall owners should put a stop to it and set limits on how kiosk venders can market and advertise their products.

OMG! I agree with you 100%! It is irritating and I feel like sometimes I'm purposefully quickening my pace to get past them fast. It is pushy and I'm betting the companies are putting only the aggressive employees out there to make a sale. I hate being outright rude, but sometimes I just can;t help it.

Many people who sell at kiosks (like cell phone salespeople) are paid on commission. These pushy sales tactics get more customers.

Ugh! They always want to straighten my natural curly hair! I always ask, "Are you saying my hair is not beautiful the way it is?" They don't know what to say after that. If I'm not in the mood to deal with them, I just keep saying "No. No. No..." as they try to approach me. Once I told a cell phone seller that I don't carry a cell phone because that's how the aliens track us. Of course I had my cell phone in my purse. Another great thing to say is, "I bought here from you last week and I love it. Don't you remember me?"

Honestly, that is the number one reason that I won't go to malls. I'd rather shop online than be harassed by these vendors. I could never ever do that as a job.

I'm sure they don't like doing it anymore than you like being on the receiving end of it. But everyone has to earn a living so try to be nice to them.

They don't target me, Only 13. But when I start to look more adult, and if nobody I know is there, I'll scream "Stranger Danger!!!" and run off.

I know they're motivated, probably by earnings based on commission...bummer.
I agree with you, it can feel like a personal invasion when they eyeball you and come after you.
Once, as one approached me like a puppy headed for breakfast, I made eye contact and said, "I'm in a bad mood!" (making a sour face). He turned around. heh heh

The secret is not letting them catch your eye. And if they still try and talk to you just say no thank you and keep walking. I wouldn't consider this rude since they accosted you first.

I know what you mean...I've tried to be nice to them, that didn't work. Tried to tell them I have skin allergies, that didn't work...now I pull a Paris Hilton and whip out my cell phone and pretend to be in deep conversation when I walk by...that works!
