People are so very easy to manipulate and especially when they are low. That's when the god squad make a move on ya and at 10% of your income that the church expects you to hand over, well, that's a good little earner for one of the most wealthiest establishments in the World. They own more land than any other organisation and yet still plead poverty when it comes to keeping their houses in order, don't they take out house/building insurance then? I think they do but get mugs to cough up to pay. Has anyone had their house repaired by a church fund? No I don't think so.
They are very good at physcology and convincing you ito believing the god theory. Don't be easily swayed and ask yourself this, has anyone actually ever seen this god thing anywhere and I don't mean when the god squad talk in tongues and go off on one it's a very easy act you just need a little acting knowledge. People fall for this sort of thing all the time even in shows on TV.
I had some friends who were talked into selling their house and giving all the money from the sale to the church... and what did the church do take the money, buy a mini bus and.... rent them one of their houses that they owned. This is true it was a Methodist establishment that talked them into doing this "as god wanted them to" They went from being quite well off to very poor but the church was no were to be seen when they needed help just kept giving them clap trap about "god will provide" Well it never happened and they committed suicide as they could no longer go on.

In modern times it is due to the vast influence of the Roman Empire, and the papal decree claiming that all countries worshiping other gods would be called pagan and divided amoung the christian countries, who now had a responability to convert them.
Why the Ancient Egyptians had a single deity "the god with no face" is still a mystery. IT is always depicted as a single eye, as it was claimed as the "all seeing god"..!!

This is a good topic in philosophy. There is an idea that to reduce all thought to a single principle that explains everything (in physics its called a TOE or Theory of Everything). IT seems that religions have tended to progress in this direction as unifying all gods into one simplifies the religion.

An infinite number of gods? That'd be way too confusing. How would one keep track of them all? And what's this about "no explanation"? Pshaw.

Easy. People who believe in a multitude of gods normally are very tolerant against other religions - adding one more god is no big deal for them. On the other hand, people who believe in one god only are obviously very intolerant against other religions: they are explicitly opposed to the idea of other gods. Therefore, monotheism has caused much more missionary activity and therefore it has spread much more among the people.
The whole thing happens just in people's minds.

26 ¶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
(Old Testament | Genesis 1:26)
So you see their is more then 1, but God our eternal father is the God of Gods, The King of Kings and the Princes of Princes`s.

belief in the one Good extends to belief in the self as being as good as the one, you are as unique as the God you believe in so I would agree that there is not limit to God

Because it has had political backing for the greater part of 2 millennia.
That's the equivalent of having an impervious shield against criticism, btw.

One of the definitions of "god" is that he is the "first cause". That is he is the one who started it all. Nothing existed before him, and nothing exist apart from him. So even if there are multiple "heavenly beings", there would have to One among them that is the "first cause" - God.

There's no need for more than one God. He created everything, and that's good enough for me.
