We are using the money to landscape our garden and finish off our property.
Please no lectures on bad etiquette- most of my guests have suggested it and it is a small wedding with only people we know very well. Besides this is 2007 not the 1950's!

Why not register with a landscape company and Home Depot? Then you'll get gift cards for the landscape and the items you were going to buy from Home Depot?

If you don't want to do that, don't register at all--they'll get the hint. Or if you have a wedding website, you can put the link to that inside your invite. Include spare directions, local hotels, and your dream to be able to finish off the landscaping. If you are artistic, you could include a picture. Before and After.

As you said, most of your guests have suggested it--it is perfectly ok to spread by word of mouth that we actually want to finish off our property and landscape our garden. Many guests do ask now and there is nothing wrong with telling those who ask.

Another idea is when you call the people who have not yet RSVPed, have your mother make those phone calls. Many people feel more comfortable asking a close family member than asking the bride and she can tell them then that you guys are busy landscaping.

Just skip the poem. You already said you know that is bad etiquette to put that in your invite. You already know that even though it's 2007, it's rude. So if you know it's wrong, don't do it.

I am not sure I understand the relationship between the wishing well and you finishing your landscaping.

If you are looking for money for landscaping, register w/Home Depot or Lowes. If you are having a wishing well instead of a guest book...just ask your guests to leave you the recipe for a happy marriage.

if you want something non-schmaltzy then I think you are barking up the wrong tree looking for a poem. Just have a nice, framed sign printed on an elegant paper that reads "Please take a moment to leave your best wishes for the bride and groom." Or something to that effect.
