I think it's Carlin who says "Never congratulate a "pregnant" woman unless you can see a head coming from an orifice"

The worst thing is after someone's had a baby and they have the stomach and someone asks when they're due. I've seen this happen on at least two occasions. Woman starts crying and leaves. Lol. I think in today's era of c-sections tummy's are not bouncing back as quickly. Don't say anything unless you're 90% sure. If it's a heavier woman who you just think is pregnant, ixnay on the remarking! Kudos for trying to be nice though. Not to mention some pregnant women are pretty hateful. I opened a door for someone the other day and she goes "I'M NOT HANDICAPPED!!!" Well jeez lady next time I'll just slam it in your face and laugh at you when you fall on your *** okay?

Yes. A bulging tummy isn't always a sign of pregancy. It's also possible that she is just gaining weight, has a certian type of cancer, or is just wearing something unflattering.
Acknowledging it without knowing 100% for sure that that's a baby and not just a little pudge can only lead to embarassment.

Only if she's not actually pregnant but has only put on a few extra pounds. I did that once, the woman still glares at me. Otherwise, it seems OK to me, pregnancy is a natural and a very beautiful thing, its wonderful, its a blessing, but I suppose to some people its dirty and nasty because sex had to be involved and that of course makes it unspeakably evil. It would in that case depend on the individual. For most people its probably OK but for some its going to be horribly rude, sexually suggestive, and sinful.

I would try to be 100% for sure that the female is pregnant before I said anything. There are females who have trouble losing the "baby stomach," and have been congratulated for being pregnant when they actually aren't. That would be really embarassing if you were wrong about it, and I'm sure it would hurt the woman's feelings also.

Yes it is rude or impolite. What if the lady is not pregnant? You should never assume anything.

it is merely rude if she would not take properly to being reported as that. even nevertheless she will take a shaggy dog tale, she's for sure have been given a line which you have have been given crossed. My missus is barely 5' one million" and he or she hates being reported as short. some extreme sucking up is needed...

Pretty much yes. From what I have witnessed and heard from other people it's just not a question you should ask. If you need to know I'm sure you will find out, and if you have to ask it's probaly not any of your buisness anyways.

You better be very very careful in doing that. A few times I have made that error and the person was NOT pregnant.

Nah, they (pregnant women) know that they're pregnant, by acknowledging the belly, you're stating the obvious which will make her feel smarter.
