Everyone has the right to defend themselves if they feel like they will suffer serious injury if they don't. However, self defense should be about stopping the assault. Not causing equal or more bodily injury to the assailant.
No woman or man or person or child should hit or slap another person.
Please don't stereotype all women by commenting that "women feel that is ok to slap us when they are mad". Not all women or people are the same and not all women share this point of view.
Women do want to be treated equally regarding matters such as gender roles, employment, physical endurance. Women's struggle for equality does not include the need or want to be hit or slapped like a man. Most men are physically stronger than most women. A man could inflict a much harder blow and cause more damage to a woman's smaller frame, weaker muscles and smaller bones.
What you are referring to here is human behavior. Behavior is taught. And sometimes people act in surprising ways when they are mentally or emotionally overcome.
You are right in one respect...people should treat others as they themselves would like to be treated.
People should find different ways to sort out problems or handle arguments, but no one is perfect.

Women probably feel like it's okay to hit a man because they don't think they can really hurt you. (Or maybe if you say something really sexist she'll do it to prove she can hurt you.) If it bothers you, tell her! If she doesn't stop, get out of the relationship. Nobody deserves to get slapped around. No, it isn't okay to hit her back unless you think your life's in danger. It wouldn't really be equal to get into a fist fight with a woman, you know. Men have more testosterone and muscle mass. You would be hitting someone smaller and weaker than you.

It's not okay for anyone to hit anyone. But society looks down on men hitting women more. When someone hits me, I hit back. I don't ever hit first. Find someone who isn't into hitting and you're all set. The question won't ever come up.

Never. Ever. Doesn't matter how malicious, how mean, how underhanded..... never ever hit a female. ever. seriously.
Women are the emotional sex and when they hit you they know that while it may sting, it has little chance of doing damage to more than your pride. When a man hits a woman, completely different story.
Never.

It depends, on how hard she hit... My ex's hit me but not hard enough to hurt so I never hit them back.. But my sister once punched me straight in the mouth with her fist, so about a year later I really let her have it... I'm not proud of that, but I hardly had a choice at the time

I don't think it is okay to hit a woman but what I do believe is a man has the right to protect themselves. Usually a man can hold a woman down, but if she has a weapon then that man can use a weapon of equal to her weapon. If she uses a stick you can use a stick. Besides that is in the law, you can't protect yourself with a gun if she has a shoe.

Don't much bother reading surveys and studies but as for >prevalence of violence against male and female students? I expect most of the violence is against male and female students. .

I don't hit girls (except for my sister on occasion). If I were you, I wouldn't ever hit any girls. Big deal, so girls hit you. Now, if girls are bullying you (hitting you to really hurt you, or if it progresses into pretending to strangle you or they kick you), tell them to stop, and if they don't, tell someone about it. There is this girl in some of my classes, and she grabs my hood and half chokes me, kicks me in the shin, and punches me. I just deal with it.
