It really depends on the part of the country and lifestyle. Region, culture, and socioeconomic status have a large effect on our eating habits.

The 'average' breakfast though is more like a bowl of cereal or a breakfast bar on the run for most Americans who are off to work or school.

And Dinner - unfortunately as our growing obesity problem attests to is most likely fast food or take out for a great many Americans. Convenience foods (prepackaged - processed kits and dinners) are also becoming more the norm than any actual cooking.

Junk food and fried stuff. Your opinion sounds more like what they ate in the 50s. Now if they have sausage and eggs and bacon it's in a breakfast burrito from some fast food place, hasbrowns have the McDonald's logo stamped on them, pancakes are frozen and microwavable and cereal is so full of sugar it's more like candy and they eat half the box in one sitting. Dinner would be pizza or whatever they ordered from a clown's mouth.

i agree with the above. That kinda question is almsot impossible to answer. Americans are made up of so many different races and backrounds and all the different regions play a major role. Whats common to eat in Alabama is probably not that common in, lets say, Nebraska...i also dont think that most people have time to eat pancakes, sausages, hashbrowns etc in the morning...thats more like if you go to a diner and eat out. I'd say most people eat some cereal or some toast/bagels, or most of the time nothing cus there's no time. I usually just grab a yogurt or have those smoothie drinks IF i even have time.

~your idea of breakfast is good for a restaurant, but i think most people eat cereal, protein/granola bars, oatmeal, eggo waffles, poptarts, or something of the pre-made sort
~dinner is so many things. we normally have a casserole, grilled chicken, sometimes steak, mexican food, noodles and sauce, or fast food ( : it's hard to have a well-rounded dinner made at home when you have five picky eaters

My guess is that handsdown the most popular breakfasts for Americans is cereal...followed by crap like poptarts, eggo waffles, Jimmy Dean sausage biscuits, and other frozen quickie things. Next is probably stuff like bagels and toast, fruit, scrambled eggs, breakfast burritos. Probably lots of takeout in there too. Lots of parents I bet are skipping breakfast as well, or drinking diet shakes and such.

My guess for dinner is that there is a lot lot lot of takeout pizza and other fast food, Boston Market type meals and rotisserie chicken and such. For homecooked meals, my bets are on easy dishes with an attempt to be healthy. Stuff like one pot dinners, stir frys, crock pot meals, casseroles. I'm sure there is an awful lot of hamburger and chicken being prepared, and at least a million families every night having spaghetti.

I don't think we have a very good handle on what's healthy yet, but I do think we are trying, and there is that damn time issue of trying to feed people on different schedules with a late start (after coming home from work). I think we are trying to learn more what is quick and healthy.

It really really helps to do menu plans. It is a little time spent at the beginning of the week, that saves a lot of hassle. At least you have a plan. IF nothing else, sketch out your dinners a week at a time, and when you are shopping make sure you have those ingredients.
