When my cat is being petted and he is purring in your lap he starts to drool. It is very gross and he also heaves but never throws anything up. He stretches his neck out and gets real close to the ground and he probably heaves about twice a day. I was wondering if it was maybe hairball issues because he does shed a lot. Can anyone help?

Some cats get so happy when they're petted they drool like crazy, it's just the way they are.

The dry hacking isn't a hair ball issue, hairballs are in the stomach and a cat would be sitting or semi-crouched with the head pointed to the floor so they can get it out of their stomach.

When the cat is croutched low to the ground with the chin stuck out as far as possible horizontal to the floor they're trying to clear their airway, it's a lung thing (not a hairball). They'll cough till whatever it is comes up sorta, then they gulp (swallow it) and it's over. Could be a loose hair inhailed, dust, mucus from the nose, a lot of things. It won't result in any hairball coming up because those are in the stomach, not the lungs.

If he sheds a lot, help him out with brushing him every other day.

The drooling could be a problem with his teeth. Ask the vet to check. As for the heaving, it more than likely is hairballs. There are foods that help with that. The vet can give you something to help with this problem too.

sounds like a hair ball that won't come up, there are some over the counter medicines you can get at the pet shop that will help him pass them. As for the drooling, not unusal. My cat Tom (he's passed away now) always drolled when i hit the right spot. I just learned to deal with it and kept a towel handy to catch the drool. He was 17 when he died this past May.

I have a cat that drools when I pet him :)
It may not be so cute if kittys breath is so-so...
But nothing you can do about it except placing a towel under the drooler, and getting his breath in order.
bad breath is a sign of dental disease.
There's a product that helps greatly for tartar and gingivitis and will clear the bad breath unless the dental problem is severe.
It is a ntural seaweed that you sprinkle onto the food. Easy, effective and affordable. Don't have an url but it is
plaqueoff I use it and it is fantastic. Works for people too :)

If it's during petting, it's not a hairball (unless that make that whiny coughing sound) it's more that he really likes the pettting! You may also see his paws 'kneeding'. Some cats do it more than others. You can search 'kneeding' and 'cats' on the web and find out more.
