Share delusion
People have been brought up to believe that "Speaking in tongues" is a result of intense belief. So when they "feel the spirit" they start speaking themselves.
Since it is gibberish, you can't exactly call it a language since they are not actually communicating anything

I am a Christian and I believe that the ones that speak in tongues are actually speaking in another language. To the non-believers, yes it will sound like gibberish to you. It is God's language that they are using to praise Him with praises that only He would understand. If a person is speaking in tongues and there is no interpreter, then talk is just between that person and God, and others won't understand. If a person is speaking in tongues and someone else interprets it than it is a message from God for others to know about. My proof? The day of the Pentecost when the Apostle Paul was teaching the word of God. All of you that are answering this question read the Bible and do some research and you will see that it isn't gibberish.

The pastor / priest / minister is putting blotter acid in the grape juice....
A joking answer is all that I can provide due to believing that someone talking in tongues is a joke all in itself!
I don't believe the bible is a load of crap....
What I do believe is a load of crap is the fact that you are trying to promote the idea that talking in tongues is speaking a language... When in fact it is not a language at all... I read a physc study on the phenomenon of speaking in tongues. One of the first signs of BS that they picked up on was that those speaking in tongues used many of the same sounds as the other people in their church. The sounds that the people were making were different from church to church. Yeap! You got it!! A big game of religious follow the leader!!!
I also believe these people are not making this crap up... These people truly believe that the Holy Spirit over takes them... The mind is a powerful entity!!
If doing this makes their world a better place, then by all means, keep doing it.
I collect Baseball Cards… It makes my world a better place and I’m going to keep doing it too!

Mass hysteria. If it were the speaking in tongues that supposedly happened in the NT then it would be a recognizable language. That's what "speaking in tongues" is supposed to be........ real languages.
I have been in services when people were "speaking in tongues" and it's all gibberish. There is no logical answer for nonsense.
Here's how it was supposed to work. Say you only spoke Greek and you wanted to share the "good news" with someone who only spoke French... the speaking in tongues would enable you to do just that.
BTW It's not just Atheists that think you people who "speak in tongues" are weird.

Do you have any links to any studies conducted by actual linguists that prove that "thousands" of people everyday speak in an actual language, and not gibberish ?
Do you have any proof that even one person has actually spoken in a actual language and not gibberish ?
I have heard so called "speaking in tongues" and it did not have the cadence or nuance of an actual language, it just sounded like "gibberish".
Someone on an internet message board claiming "thousand" speak in tongues everyday is not proof.
Show me the proof.
This would be an EASY phenomenon to study scientifically. So far I have seen ZIP studies that show that anyone has actually spoken in an unknown language.
So until you show me some actual PROOF, (and not just a charismatic minister saying it is so) than I consider it to be nothing more than babble.
Edit to add: And it's not just "athiests and bible bashers" who think talking in tongues in gibberish. Many Christians don't believe in it, and some even think it is of the devil.

Ice, as a Christian, there are flaws with your statement. Paul said that tongues was supposed to be a language that has meaning 1 Corinthians 14:8-16. Paul said there should be someone who can interpret the language present or to be silent, 1 Corinthians 14:23,27-28. Anyway, Paul says that tongues will cease to be in 1 Corinthians 13:8.

Any meaningless speech is called glossolalia.
Glossolalia classically, speaking in a language that one has never had an opportunity to learn through the mundane means. ="speaking in tongues".
A charismatic gift according to some belief systems. A few groups have interpreted the gift of speaking in tongues to mean being able to babble nonsensically.
Just because "thousands of people every day speaking in tongues" doesn't make it true.

Know one actually knows if these "languages" are actual languages.
Two, there can be no logical answer, because the whole idea of tongues is supposed to take you to a whole other realm of spirituality , where the mind is not getting in the way. Tongues is supposed to bypass the Human mind.
Three, I speak in tongues. Ancient Hebrew, Ancient Greek, Japanese, Coptic, Aramaic, and Syriac. I personally speak in many tongues, that I studied for years and years.

Ex-Christian atheist. Tongues speaker.
And I still can.
It's not exclusive to Christianity, by any means, but is found in other religions, which is odd if it is a gift of the Spirit.
"Our findings are more consistent with social learning than with altered state conceptions of glossolalia."
..as previously given, seems to hit the spot.
I submit the evidence is that it is something the human brain can do under certain circumstances, particularly when exposed to examples of such, coupled with the desire to belong, conform, and experience the same.
And I don't mean that people doing such are consciously "faking."

The speaking of tongues gift you are referring to from the bible... Is NOT the same as the "Gibberish" people do when up in front of an English speaking congregation--
The Disciples spoke to different cultures.. to those that did not speak their language-- IN THE LANGUAGE THE PEOPLE understood! THAT is what speaking in tongues means.. not standing in front of a church congregation and speaking sounds that NO ONE understands.
Just a note- I am NOT an Atheist-- However I did attend one of those churches where a man walked up front and babbled & rambled on.. I asked my friend what he was saying -- she said she had no idea... that he was speaking in tongues..... so what purpose was there to that?? Who gained a blessing?? The entire congregation spoke english.. NO ONE had any idea what on earth he said.. so I knew at that point it was NOT real--if not one person understood-- he was just making a spectacle of himself. That is not a gift of God.

I have spent my entire life, up to about 3 years ago in a church. I know the ropes, the beliefs, I got it all. I still have yet to see someone speak an actual language that they had not at least studied previously while praying. At best I've heard the same jibberish that comes out of my 2 yr old's mouth coming from someone supposedly speaking in tongues. And another thing - if you were to witness someone doing such a thing - do you know any other languages? Would you be able to spot what they were speaking? I firmly believe that if you feel something and you have a connection or belief in a God, you don't need outward works to show that. It will exude from you, it's your spirit, not your tongue that shows you're a believer.
