Yes
This is a good indicator that you have an insect infestation in your siding----I did. Consider it an early warning of problems.
If pecking is concentrated in specific area, I tacked a piece of sheet metal to the siding (temporary). After a few visits, they didn't come back and I took it down

No my home never has been pecked by a woodpecker. Any woodpeckers that come into my yard prefer the trees.
Woodpeckers can be beneficial, they eat bugs that would kill trees. However if you want to get rid of woodpeckers, I would advise looking at this website:

Here are some websites about woodpeckers:

EDIT:
I just read what miss ellie and tnerb52 wrote. They both have a good point, you should find out if your house has termites or some other harmful kind of insect.

in the event that they have been pecking on the wood siding on my residing house, i might enable them to on my own. The woodpeckers are actual doing you a choose by ability of drawing your interest to the indisputable fact which you in all probability have some bugs on your siding. in the event that they weren't there pecking, you in all probability would not have observed. Now you realize and you may replace the wood that needs changing. i might build a fowl feeder and fill it with seeds and nuts that woodpeckers like. ---

Thank goodness, no, the woodpeckers have confined their pecking to the railing on my deck, which needs to be replaced anyway, so I'm not too upset about it. But I can help you with your problem,
First, remember that in the US, all native migratory birds are protected by federal law (Migratory Brid Treaty Act), and it is illegal to kill them or harm them.
You can find the suggestions given by the US Fish and Wildlife Service here:
