There's a joke and a very deep (to the point of being pointless) philosophical discussion in there somewhere...
God is omnipotent, so He could play a game of chess against Himself. (Not switching sides on the board like you could alone, but truly against Himself.) At the same time, He is omniscient, so wouldn't He already know what moves He would make? You could get a headache thinking too hard about that...

But you're asking about the purpose of God, also. God doesn't have a purpose in the sense that He was created or caused for something. God has always been. (He described Himself simply as "I am".) We have purpose. The things around us were created with purpose. God just is. (But that "is" is a lot; it makes God quite big, rather than quite small.)

Also, even if He doesn't strictly *need* them, God does have many friends. There are angels and saints in heaven, and there are His family members here on earth.

Checkmate? I declare an illegal move to the checkmate. The options are Creator vs. Perpetual Existence (big bang, etc) Both of these options require a great deal of faith. I think you will agree that humans have struggled over the chicken vs. egg question. Something must come before something else correct? But that must mean there is no creator right? Wrong. Something had to have come first. If this is a logic based argument, isn't it easier to believe in an intelligent supreme designer being the original than an infinite randomness always being in existence? But then the evolutionists pull out the "Big Bang-Big Crunch theory" and that these things exist outside of Time and Space. If this is so easy for atheists to believe, then why can't God exist outside of Time and Space? I'll gladly keep this conversation going so long as it is mature and without personal attack.

Well things in the old testament lead me to believe there were other gods. Why else would God be JEALOUS, why would he get upset of people worshiping other gods, making images of them and so on.

Maybe the earth is god's chessboard, man the pieces and he plays chess every day against other gods.

He had some friends, but the other gods refuse to play with him these days; he was always throwing those temper tantrums.
