Most HUDs are basically just TVs. The key to getting it to work is what is called the "combiner glass", which is the actaully viewing surface of the HUD.

What happens is the combiner glass is mounted at a 45 degree angle to the TV screen, which usually is housed down a tube to prevent glare. The TV image reflects off the combiner glass, so that you can both see what is through the combiner glass (out of the cockpit if you were in an airplane) and what is being displayed on the TV below.

if you can get Combiner and teleprompter mirror easily then your half job is done.. which are utmost important component of building one and rest you can use any display...
