Meditation is all of these things. It is a path toward greater self-realization, the realization that all is one, and that God, the Universe, and You are just different slices of the same apple. Meditation is a form of prayer, of direct interaction with the Divine. And, at the same time, it is a healthy practice for everyone, regardless of their religion or lack thereof.

Actually doing things for others is when I feel closest to God. When I am doing his will. Meditation helps me most when the burdens of living grow to be heavy-when I am feeling frustrated or hurt. It is what I do for me to calm myself down though I am sure God plays a role in it. I pray intermittently through out the day so I do not think of meditation time as prayer time.

mediation won't get you any closer to God than skateboarding or making a sandwich will. You would need to try prayer. Thanking him for everything he does for you and then prayer requests for the things you turn over to him becasue you need him in your life and can't do it without him.
Philippians 4:6-7 (New Living Traslation)
6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Meditation helps you realize exactly what the word "God" means, and why so many people are silly to refer to God as a He, She or It.
As per your questions:
How could God ever be closer than God already is?
God does not sit in any appreciable way, at least not in the way we define the word.
If you have right understanding, everything has everything to do with God, and absolutely nothing at all.

The only way to heaven is to be born again. Read the Book of John. I'm sorry you don't like that term....but that's what God says. Once you are born again, you will receive the Holy Spirit...you will have new eyes, ears and a new heart and will understand God's word.

Christians meditate on God's word:
Psalm 1:2 But His delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.
When we meditate on God's word the Holy Spirit gives life to the word which is imparted to our spirit. This life is the life of God imparted to our spirit:
John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit and they are life.
As more and more of God's life is imparted as we continue to meditate on more and more of God's word there will come a time we can say that it no longer we live but Christ lives in us:
Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Meditation helps us to have God in us. This is as close as God can get to us.

Meditation helps me realize that angels are dead set on harassing me. Why can't the damn things just go away and die or something to that effect? Let me meditate in PEACE!

I would say that it has nothing to do with god and is a healthy practice.
