Yes. We recently purchased a HDTV. We already were subscribers to Direct TV satellite service. However, when I phoned Direct to see how to get the HD channels, I was informed that I would have to subscribe to their HD service, which cost me about 10 bucks extra a month. I was also required to upgrade my DirectTV satellite receiver to an HD model.

You will be able to watch your new TV without these things, but your picture will not be in HD. It's kinda like buying a Corvette and driving around at 40 mph all the time.

The tuner means you can simply put up an antenna to get free broadcast HD channels.

Antennaweb.org will let you know what size antenna you need.

But it is often better to upgrade your Sat or CATV service and get both a HD package and a DVR.

Yes you will need to upgrade to an HD receiver and also may have to upgrade your dish depending on what kind you have.
With Dish Net you will need a dish 1000 or dish 500+wing antenna
With Direct Tv you will need one of their monster Ka/Ku dishes
