There are no drinks enjoyed more throughout the world than soda, particularly Coca Cola brand soda. However, many people do not consider the health concerns linked with soda. Like most other sweets, such as cake, ice cream and cookies, it is fine to have a soda once in a while. But many people drink over a can a day, without thinking twice about what exactly they are doing to their bodies.

Coke contains over 70 grams of sugar per 20 oz bottle. That relates to about 300 calories, all from sugar. So if a person drinks two bottles of Coke in one day, that's around 600 calories - close to 1/3 of the amount of calories you are supposed to take in for an entire day. Not only that, but these calories come from an artificial sugar - high fructose corn syrup. This sugar has been linked to diabetes and insulin resistance.

Many elementary schools have Coke vending machines where children grow up drinking Coke, again never understanding the damages they are doing to their bodies.

Hmm, a diabetic who knows next to nothing about the disease. You think that extremely high sugar intake has nothing to do with diabetes? Sure there is more than one way to contract is but this disease has to do with blood sugar level and insulin production. You are clearly the one who is in need of doing research. I can start you off here:

I read this book that said sodas contained excitotoxins (pasted the link below), basically meaning they stimulate your nerves to death, so to speak. This makes a lot of sense to me, from my own experience, that after a while it seems you need more than one soda to have a "awake" or "pick-me-up" type effect.

I limit myself to one soda a day, which I'm sure by other people's standards is probably too high. Interestingly, though, I have noticed that on days I go to the gym, I don't need a soda. I feel like I have enough energy without it.

Yes full sugar sodas are not great... but there are worse things you could do to your body. I would like to hear about how high fructose corn syrup is linked to diabetes... I am a diabetic and got it due to an upper respiratory virus that I got as a teen... check your science on that. Insulin resistance is linked to obesity, so I guess high fructose corn syrup contributes to that.

The school district that I live in has a new rule where the soda machines only carry diet sodas, water, and natural juice. The hours that the machines are on are restricted also... not during school hours. In our elementary schools the only vending machines are located in the teachers lounges. I would talk to your school board with ideas such as this if you are really concerned for the children in your district.

ummm.. was this a question.... or a lecture? it doesn't seem like it was something you needed help with, or even answers to for that matter. I'm sure some will appreciate your lecture about the evils of coke. I don't drink soda simply because it has no nutritional value, so I won't express an opinion. But I think there are more appropriate forums where a discussion format is acceptable. This isn't the place for it.

One of my exes used to drink like 3 or 4 Mountain Dews a day. I am not sure how long he had been doing this, but he was only 28, and one day at work they sent him to the hospital. He felt like he was having a heart attack. Keep in mind, that he looked totally healthy on the outside. He was not overweight, he worked out, etc. But the doctor told him that if he didn't stop drinking Mountain Dew, he was going to end up dying much sooner, because it was having extremely negative affects on his heart. So I know for a fact that pop is bad for you. Especially the ones high in sugar, like Mountain Dew. I think this goes for pop, as well as many other things that are bad for you : everything in moderation. Too much of anything is a bad thing.

Sodas are bad for you period. That even includes diet sodas. Not just Coke, and Pepsi, that should include all sugary drinks.
