In a secular society, there is no 'one religion'.

It has become common to use 'CE' (common era) instead of 'AD'

(Anno Domini - 'in the year of our Lord')

Do you think people should still use 'In The Year Of Our Lord' whether or not they follow Jesus? Or do you think 'Common Era' is more reasonable in a secular society?

Or do you see secularism as a threat to your religion's influence in the world around you?

"I guess you want it to bother us, or you would not ask."

No, as a matter of fact I find it amusing that both secularists and religionists here both claim that the other side are bothered most of all.

Sometimes people 'ask' because they are interested in people's views. Is that a far stretch for you?

Just to interject some facts into this discussion....

CE and BCE (which isn't ugly at all) came into use amongst archaeologists, anthropologists and other people who were researching and writing about cultures that existed before or outside of Christianity.

It sounds really truly goofy to be saying Before Christ when you're writing about ancient Chinese civilization.

I don't think that any religion should be part of our society, as there are many different religions in the 'western world'. Freedom of religion is a good thing, and our society should reflect that. However, I'm not easily offended, so though I think terms like CE and BCE are preferable, I'm not offended by AD and BC.

People are too easily offended nowadays.

I've never heard of that abbreviation, other than a safety/compliance mark put on items made in the European Community.

Personally I will continue to think of it as AD. I would never change to use CE.

I don't see secularism as a threat to MY faith. I'll continue to believe what I believe irrespective of what you think. Thus you can believe what you want to believe, I will believe what I want to believe. Each to his own! Vive la difference !

Honestly, I'm an atheist and even I think using CE and BCE is going overboard (and BCE is just ugly). AD and BC have moved into common usage, it doesn't remind me of Jesus, and I haven't used "AD" in years. If I write my birthyear as 1973 not a lot of people will assume it is BC(E).

The abbreviations 'b.c.' and 'a.d.' offend me - It offends me when people assume I'm Christian. In a secular society, b.c.e. and c.e, are the proper choices for anything intended for the general population.

Yes, it deeply offends me and I shall write letters, make phone calls, and boycott it until it's replaced!!

Nah, just kidding. Who cares? Time is relative anyway. If I'm going to be offended by that I might as well be offended that the days of our week are named after Pagan Greek and Roman gods, right?

no, it only insults the narrow minded...
what is next ?

oh, let's not forget to eliminate all the first names which come from the bible, lest we insult somebody who thinks bible is nonsense...
then we go and remove St from all the city names such as St Petersburg... so we don't offend or insult anybody...
then we make New Orleans Saints change their name, we sue them if they don't
Then we remove all the money with *in god we trust* from circulation
where do we end ?

In this PC-gone wild society, we're constantly bombarded with "you can't say that" arguments from offended Christians.

I'd like to know what makes them think that "offending a Christian" is something any of the rest of us should bother avoiding. No-one bothers to make any effort to avoid offending non-Christians - why should Christians be so privileged?

I guess you want it to bother us, or you would not ask. " CE" or "AD" you still base it on the same date, so why would I care? Jesus Christ said, "know that when they hate you, they have hated Me first." Coincidence? maybe, but it is none the less relevant.
