Do you believe that the Department of Homeland Security, five years after its creation, is fulfilling its job of securing our nation?

Absolutely not! Not just "no," hell no! If it was, I'd still be working.

The potential for great accomplishments was present when DHS was first created. The idea of combining the authorities of immigration officers and customs officers into one "Super Inspector" was very promising. Instead of hating one another, inspectors from the two Services could have united and struck a powerful blow to the enemy (smugglers, illegal aliens, false document presenters, impostors, contraband carriers, etc.)

Instead, the Customs management took over in what is commonly referred to as "The Hostile Takeover."

ICE is a failure. As is CBP. Neither is working out well. The Customs mentality cannot be applied to immigration scenarios, and probably vice versa, and with legacy Customs people in charge of most areas and departments, things will only get worse.

CBP loses 70 employees every two weeks. Legacy immigration people are leaving CBP for jobs that they never would have taken if they were still in INS. ICE is losing legacy Customs agents to jobs that they would not have spit on before the merger.

You are far less safe now than you were before 9/11.

That depends on what you mean.

The Head of DHS Michael Chertoff is an Israeli-American dual national. So is Michael Mukasey, our new Attorney General.

Their idea of security varies greatly from mine.
For example, I'd like to see 911 and the anthrax murderers punished and I'd like to see our Constitutional rights preserved. Whereas they seem to be protecting the anthrax murderer(s) and infringing on our freedoms.

But Chertoff is doing a good job at whatever it was he was hired to do. Bush seems happy with him.

There is no violence in the US for last five years and it is because of the Department of Homeland Security.

Did formation of DHS magically solve all our problems? No. Did they (Bush Administration) do a spectacular job in the formation? No.
Are more people working to protect our borders, coasts, ports, airspace, and people from terrorists? Yes.
If DHS had not been formed - where would we be, compared to where we are?
