I saw on the TV once that an ex police seargent had written a book explaining all the "cons" police use etc and how to get out of things etc. I saw that one of the major ones was, if pulled over by the police, dont EVER EVER show them your driving licence, infact dont take it with you when in car. Why is this? I dont understand the reaosn behind it? Im in the UK remember.

To the first responder, it is different here. You can get a producer and show your documents within 7 or 14 days depending on circumstances, and drive away quite happily. Just wanted to know why he advised not to ever show.

Slicktop is very wrong! The only time you are required to show an ID in the US is if you are doing something that requires a license (well outside of some traveling and their security stuff...I am talking about normal every day life).

Now with that said, if you are doing something that gives the police reason to suspect you of some wrong deeds they can detain you for a short period of time to identify you. In this case they had better be right...or they open themselves to a personal lawsuit as well as the department that employees them.

There is no law in the US that states you have to carry an ID. But, you do have to identify yourself if the police ask...and they have the means to determine if that is more than likely who you claim you are.

Now, to the reason why an ex cop would say never show your Driver Lisc. lately they are encoded with your entire history on a magnetic strip on the back. I still think this is very stupid advice though.

The reason you would never show your drivers licence to police is that you want to make a small donation to the government.

If you are driving a car you are expected to have your licence on you (at least in most countries) and to show it to a law enforcement officer on request, if you don't show it then you can be fined.

If you're walking and haven't done anything wrong then you might have the right to refuse to identify yourself but if you are operating a car you don't have that right (a car is a lethal weapon and should be treated as such and that means holding the drivers accountable for their actions).

Dont know about the UK!
In the US, you are required to have your DL with you anytime operating a motor vehicle.
You are required by law to show it upon an officers request.

I don't know UK law, but in the US you are legally obligated to show identification when requested by the police. You may very well be arrested if you don't, and held until your real ID is established. It might be different there, but I doubt it.
