Do his balls get cut off completely, or do they just cut a certain part of his bits?
Are there any websites detailing what happens, with pictures?

As one or two others said---males are NOT spayed. Spaying means removing the uterus and ovaries, which only female cats have.

Males are neutered. The testes are taken out, or the tube to each is cut and sealed off with heat. Usualy it's taken out completely. They leave the fur parts there though. This eliminates the sperm so they can't reproduce.

Another term is castration. In this surgery the doctor makes an incision in front of the scrotum and through that incision accesses each testicle. The fibrous coverings of the testicles are incised and each testicle is removed after securely ligating the blood vessels that attach to each testicle. The benefits of having a dog and cat neutered are well documented. And to simply do a vasectomy to render the male sterile would not alleviate the scent marking, desire to breed, territorial defense and other testosterone driven behaviors. Even in guard dogs and hunting dogs, many owners report improved behavior and manageability when the dog has been neutered.

Well, first off ... you spay a female and neuter a male. They take his testicles out. It's a much easier procedure than the spay, which the vet has to take the ovaries out.

You don't. Spaying is removing the ovaries of a female cat. Male cats are neutered - the testicles are removed.

They remove the testes but leave the bag. Crueller versions include using an elastic band and a can of electrical freezer for complete removal as was used in some steelworks to control the feral cat population.
