3,500 extra calories need to be expended to work off a pound of fat. Putting that in to perspective a gentle jog will use up about 100 calories per kilometre, which you can run in 7 minutes. This means you would need to jog 35 kilometres which would take about 4 hours.

A calorie = the amount of energy required to raise one litre of water by one degree

you want this in pounds??? No wonder we get confused

Just remember you could do lots of exercise and gain weight from it.
Because muscle is denser than fat - so weighs more.

So you could burn that calorie but gain weight ---
--- worry more about the inches and less about the pounds.
Better still DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

One pound of body fat does indeed contain aproximately 3500 calories.

However, when you exercise your body does not draw 100% of it's calorific requirements from stored body fat. The ratio varies depending on the type of exercise and how hard you are working etc but still does not reach 100%.

So it is not quite as simple as watching a calorie counter on a piece of exercise equipment, which only give a rough estimate anway, waiting for it to reach 3500 and then directly equating that to the loss of 1lb of body fat.

3,500 calorie = 1lb of fat
600 calories = 1lb of muscle

As you can see, if you are not careful you can end up burning muscle instead of fat. To avoid losing muscle instead of fat, be sure to eat plenty of protein and do strength training 2-3 times per week.
