I lived there for years and never had a problem. Don't show an attitude, be respectful and you should be fine.

They've probably been watching a little to much Dog the Bounty Hunter and seen only the "rough" parts of town!
As with any other metro city, there are areas that are rougher than others BUT it's not as bad here as you think it will be. Each neighborhood has it's own quirks so you'll have to make your own decisions once you get here.
I would suggest however if you are white from the mainland that you should avoid anywhere past Kapolei (such as Waianae, Nanakuli, Makaha, etc), Kalihi at night, and Chinatown at night. You are liable to get yourself in a lot of trouble if you're not "localized" before you attempt such places.
Hope that helps you......good luck!

The usual tourist would not go to these 'rough' places, although Waikiki itself is one of the most rough places on Oahu. However, other than that you really shouldn't even be going to the bad side of town. Let me break it down for you.
Stay away from:
Kalihi, Chinatown, backstreets of Waikiki.
Basically any place that looks ghetto, looks like that for a reason.
Yeah, Oahu has a couple nice beaches and occasional good weather. That's just the brochure. The REAL Oahu is not as nice as it looks and has its ghettos and trash filled streets and gangs and homeless people and rough areas just like any other place. I'd have to say Oahu is filled with ghettos but if you stick to typical tourist spots like central Waikiki by the beach, Ala Moana Shopping Center, North Shore, etc., you should be fine.
Again, I don't see any reasons why you would end up in an area considered 'rough' unless you got lost or are looking for trouble. Stay with crowds and tourist areas. You should be fine.

Chances are, you'll be staying somewhere that's very tourist-oriented, and therefore should be fine. You'd have no reason to be in any of the places you should avoid, so don't worry about it and enjoy your vacation. But like everyone else said, just be respectful and don't act like you own the place. And don't stare at local people, that's usually the quickest way to get into a fight with someone, looking them straight in the eye. It may be normal if you're from the mainland, but here, you'll just get yourself in trouble.

For the most part, the parts of Oahu where tourists go are pretty safe. In addition to the areas already named, I would probably avoid Waimanalo at night. Like most cities, it is probably a bit chancy for a single woman to be out alone late at night (though I still do it). Overall, our violent crime statistics are pretty low.

I agree with NWIP. I also live here in Honolulu for many many years, been round the whole island of Oahu many times & there is no place & nothing to be avoided. It's they way you present yourself just don't show attitude.

No matter where you go in the world, you should travel smart.
Carry only what you need when going to the beach or cruising....
Put your things in the trunk that you don't plan to take with you when you park the car.
Always lock your doors when you park.
Be respectful and have a great time!

There are places in the downtown area where you don't really want to be after dark due to a high amount of drug usage, but I agree with the person who said, "be respectful" and "don't show attitude."
