'Cos all nutrition info. seem to use kcal. I know kcal is kilocalories. But it's way off to say 1 kcal = 1000 calories?

calories is just a short-hand way of saying kilo-calories

We get the term calorie from calorimeter - this device is used to determine the energy value of a foodstuff. A known amount of oxygen is added and the foodstuff is burned to find out how much energy (heat) it produces.

100kcal is 100,000 calories - that's quite a few pizzas!
