What kind of deep, calming, spiritual music would you put on to drown it out?

I prefer opera for that, myself. I can't be angry listening to opera.

Though Static X works very nicely, too.

And to make this religious (since this IS R&S, after all, we can't be off topic here), what is your religion or lack thereof?

We don't have animal control on post...and the Germans can't come here for that reason.
Besides, I couldn't do that to my neighbor. We're friends. I'll be talking to her about it later.
The dog is just a puppy, after all, and doesn't know better yet.

Yeah, the loud music used to be a problem here, too. My former downstairs neighbor was a DJ. It got REALLY loud here, every day.
I'd prefer the dog, myself...but at least if I asked the neighbors to tone it down, they did...I can't go ask the dog to tone it down, lol.

I actually have that problem, and I do use music to drown the noise. If I am trying to sleep, I put on Yanni or Enya. If I am on my computer, I put on The Beach Boys, The Ventures, Beethoven, Tschaikovski, or something else that I can enjoy at a slightly elevated volume level. I have even tried praying for the dog to be called home in a fiery chariot the way of Elijah the prophet. I talked to the neighbors, who, by the way, do keep the dog quiet when they are home, but can't do anything when they aren't. I even offered to buy a bark collar, or lend the guy my rifle. No takers. How much can a Christian stand?

You might see if your neighbors would try using a barking collar …it can be used during hours when the dog is most active in his barking endeavors. It will give the dog enough discipline to keep him from excessively barking. There are many reasons a dog will continually bark, he is seeking attention, communicating with other dogs and or sound…such as whistles/trains/even a constant movement of cars… (my dogs talk to every train that runs four miles from my home…they serenade …it’s ridiculous…but funny) most likely he has never been trained or disciplined in this behavior. I allow my dogs to serenade …I taught them how to do it…we live along 40 acres…no one cares and I get a kick out of it! Dogs are intelligent they have the ability to have a large vocabulary…but, just like children…you have to communicate, in a repetitive manner. The command must be in a tone other than the normal voice, the command should be the same command used for each discipline or praise, No, down, come, to far, good dog, cookie, door…dogs learn words when they are used repetitively. Hand motions can be used as well, from inside the house the owner can hand signal a dog to sit, stand, be quiet…my dogs are train in both manners…when I point to the door they come to the door, when I hold my hand in a fist, arm extended… pointing at them, this means HOLD...they stop in their tracks and won’t move until I give them the command to move. For their own safety dogs need training.

Your neighbor may need a few lessons on how to care and train a dog.

I'm Wiccan - I would ask the neighbors to deal with the dog or I'd call the police. There's a good chance that dog is being neglected.

hehee- can I apply this to "your children whining incessantly"? (no dog problems around here :))

I listen to Kingdom Melodies (religious music of Jehovah's Witnesses)... I also like Enya, Dido, Fiddler on the Roof, Jekyll and Hyde... ooooh and ESPECIALLY the Chrono Cross CD (a music CD I got for free when I bought the game eons ago... music is by Blue Man Group I believe).
I like some oldies too... Dream a little dream and Have you ever seen a dream walking (don't know exact title lol)... Pink Elephants on parade, Flowers on the Wall.
I like classical music too and Yanni, or Celtic tunes with lots of flutes and nature sounds, I just don't listen to them as often.

I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

The 'on hold' music when calling Animal Control isn't too bad.

Don't worry about it. Learn to live with it.

I used to live in an apartment building where loud music came through my walls from all directions. I just learned to block it out.
