Jews haven't. Evangelical Christians haven't. Does it matter what anyone else thinks?

Depends if people ever thought it was important and holy!
Surely this isn't a question of FAITH, is it? Faith is a belief that is not based on fact. All countries have importance for their place in the World and their impact on the region that they are placed in. Considering the amount of time news programmes feature what is going on in the Middle East and Israel's role in it.
Can any country be called holy? I don't know

I see no evidence at all of waning importance. Look at all the fighting going on over this tiny piece of land.
Certainly there is much in Israel that is considered holy by Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Whether the adjective can be applied to Israel itself, or any other political entity, I am not sure.

(Matthew 23:37-38) . . .“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the killer of the prophets and stoner of those sent forth to her,—how often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks together under her wings! But YOU people did not want it. 38 Look! YOUR house is abandoned to YOU.
When his disciples pointed out to Jesus the magnificent temple buildings, he said: “Do you not behold all these things? . . . By no means will a stone be left here upon a stone and not be thrown down.”—Matthew 24:1, 2.
Jesus’ prophecy was fulfilled 37 years later in the year 70Â C.E., when Roman armies destroyed Jerusalem and its temple. That provided dramatic proof that God had indeed abandoned his typical house. Jesus never foretold the rebuilding of another temple in Jerusalem. Regarding that earthly city, the apostle Paul wrote to Hebrew Christians: “We do not have here a city that continues, but we are earnestly seeking the one to come.” (Hebrews 13:14) Early Christians looked forward to becoming part of “heavenly Jerusalem”—the citylike Kingdom of God. (Hebrews 12:22) Thus, the true worship of Jehovah is no longer centered at a physical temple on earth.

I can't speak for others but I don't think any one country is all that important or holy.
Yes Jesus lived and died there but many very devout souls lived and died in Spain for example.
I'm not taking away what He did for us as frivolous but it doen't make the country any more holy or important especially when it has behaved in the manner which it does with other beliefs and lifestyles.

Israel is a mostly secular country and it is very damaging to the United States. If we hadn't intervened in the Suez Crisis if 1956, it would still be a British problem.

some married foreign women who brought their form of pagan worship into their husbands house...and to keep the peace he went along with and allowed this false worship
some were influenced by the cities and neighbors they lived in or near. that's why we are encouraged to avoid close association with those of other faiths.

Nope. The Jews are going back home as prophesied in the Bible that God will gather His people back home after being scattered throughout the world. No other group of people have been so scattered, killed and discriminated against that still survive other than the Jews, it only shows that they have a special part to play and that God will always preserve them.
