maybe because of the karate kid movies....that dude was kind of nerdy at first. Once you get past the nerdy part they will probably start saying it doesn't "work". Then they will say show me something. Then they will say what if I do this then that won't work. Then they will say what if I come up behind you and you don't know it?. Then maybe someone will try you and you will have to hurt them and they will say why did you hurt them? They were just playing. Or if none of the above happens somebody will be bragging about themselves and a well meaning friend will say "yeah but I bet you can't beat him up (while pointing at you) LOL Moral: Don't pay attention to what "they" say. Be selective about who you tell your karate stories too. Hopefully none of that will happen to you.

Hi there
Opinions vary.
If you like to train in something that helps you develop and keeps you fit then whats wrong with that? Better than sitting on your backside playing video games all day.
Besides who cares what other people think. As long as you enjoy it that's all that matters.
All martial arts come in Fads. At the moment its UFC this and BJJ that. I'm afraid Karate is no longer in fashion theses days.
Best wishes

I've never heard that being said at all in the past 32 years.
Although my little sister used to say my Sensei was a nerd... I think she just had a crush on him.

Thats not the most wide-spread stereotype, but thats the thing about stereotypes: one can exist for almost any situation. I'm not sure why your asking the question, but if you do karate i would carry no concern for what others thought. If you enjoy it, keep it up, don't let people's badgering or stupid labels interfere.

I don't here people say this.
It is true that many people get into the arts to boost their self-confidence and learn defense. Many people in the arts have been victimized and now refuse to let it happen to them again.
Perhaps that is where some of this attitude comes from.

I guess because the nerds are the one who need self defense against the bully...but not all people say that, only a minority of people make a stupid comment like that...

Well I train in kickboxing and I get stupid comments all the time. The most common is that kickboxing is 'gay', and boxing is the better choice. Then I explain that boxing used to allow kicks and throws and if that doesn't shut them up, I offer them on in a sparring match. They would use boxing and I would use kickboxing, to date none of them have taken me up on the offer. lol.
They are just ignorant tos**rs!

Because they've only seen the B.S. version of it which you can see a lot in a lot of places in America. Like Tiger Schaulmen's, and Mcdojo.

Sour grapes
When people put down something that requires a lot of hard work the reason is almost always that they know that they don't have the "Grit" to to do it themselves.

Jealousy i guess?
If you can't do something or lack commitment to something it is the easy way out to belittle it.
You know.... it is always easier to criticize than to do something.
Ask them if football is nerdy, or Boxing, or snow boarding.
