I like the idea of shared parental leave ~ several couples I know would have benefitted from it and it seems the fair option, though as Mabel points out maternity leave is also about giving the woman time to physically recover. I'm less sure about granting compulsory extended periods to either mother or father though. While I can sympathise with couples who want to bond with their child I also know it can be frustrating to have to cover for people on extended leave. Three months each seems pretty reasonable imo, a year less so - but if companies want to attract the best talent, they should be free to offer good maternity/paternity leave packages ... and many do, completely of their own volition.

Paternity leave is when the new dad takes time off of work to be with his wife and newly born. All companies are required to allow males have the same rights as females when it comes to taking leave of absence due to a new baby. I believe in most cases the paternity leave is 6 weeks without pay and without the risk of getting laid off.. If you are in a position where you can afford to take off six weeks to be with your new family then I would recommend it to take advantage of bonding with your new baby.

When a man becomes a father, he is allowed to take some time off from work to bond with the new family member. (his child)
Some companies offer this benefit. Others don't. Most european countries have this benefit. Whereas in the US mostly mothers get to have the maternity leave, not the males. However, it is changing. And that's a good thing.

To directly answer your question, paternity leave by definition is the father leaving work for a period of time and getting paid by either the state or the federal government to aid the mother in raising of the new baby. It also aids the child to bond with the father which is much needed in my opinion.
In California you get 12 weeks of paid leave from your work. You apply through the EDD. It is paid under the FMLA (family leave medical act). I am someone who received 3 months of paid leave from work. It is based on your income but most people can do ok with the money they get from the state EDD. Just apply online. I was grateful for it, and I believe the child benefits from bonding with both parents.

companies, especially human resources department have knowledge about paternity leave. So, whenever that happened, it has nothing to worry because that seven days leave would be paid, its a privelege or benefits of an employee.

It is a kind of leave, which is given by a company to a new father, after his baby is born. It varies from company to company. You have to verify with the HR of the company, how many leaves will they provide you, if you become a father. Mostly this leave is for 14 days in MNCs

Leave granted to a husband to take care of the wife and baby at the time of child birth. Much less than the maternity leave given to working women to help them take care of themselves and the newborn. Still, it is a good gesture on the part of the employer and helps the husband play his role in the birthing process.
