Isn't that discriminating against other ethnic groups because I don't believe that there are any white people on that network, and every other network has people representing a different race. Also, would it be considered racist if someone made a network named WET (White Entertainment Television)?

It's not racism if black people do it.

BET came about mainly as a video network. Back in the days when MTV showed videos most of the day. MTV didn't show but one or two videos by black artists. So somebody made a network that provided an outlet for these artists. And there have been many white people on BET, just not the hosts of the shows. It's not racist, it's just focused toward a specific group of people. Maybe the name BET should have been different, but it was direct.
I guess your next question will be about the spanish language stations. People need to get past this whole race thing.

It's allowed because before cable, there were few public stations, and those stations would serve a general audience, not larger niche markets. Your question could ask - why is there a WE (Women's Entertainment), Spike TV (for men), Univision (for Latin viewers), LogoTV, HindiTV or CMT (country music channel)? These niche stations cater to audiences who desire cultural information usually not addressed by the former "one size fits all" programming model. All cultural groups (men, women, teens, minorities, seniors, etc.) are different, and want entertainment that addresses their specific needs so television (and music) are already segregated. To address your "White Entertainment Television" statement, everybody is different and I'll give you an example from college: a white male classmate was on a flight and the only magazine available was Essence, a pub geared toward African American women. He read it because he was bored. Anyhoo, seeing female African American models and reading articles geared toward women made him think the pub was racist until he realized that's probably what African American females throught about Glamour and Cosmopolitan. Bottom line, we all like having entertainment choices as well as the ability to change the channel if it's not speaking to us. Best wishes.

I vote Matt starts WET, that is so funny, it's a free country, you should go for it. BET is a pretty good channel, there is one similar, that I get now, something like black family channel, I really like that one because it shows really weird old cartoons in the morning. Maybe BET would be racist if it were BOT Black Only Television.

no..its called Black Entertainment Television..hip hop is performed by blacks, there is black comedy on there....this station has paved the way for many blacks to be successful today in the entertainment business after not having much for so many years this station gives us/them an opportunity to expose our/their talent and be more recognized around the country and world...because that has led to rappers getting endorsment deals, acting roles which makes them appeal to a broader audience..this gives them a better chance cuz they are not only on mtv...but BET as well. if your not a superstar in the rap game you know its gonna be tough to get on MTV so BET is a good starting ground to get some tv play...then if it becomes a hit.....your gonna be seen on mroe channels like VH1 and MTV, MTV2. plus there is stilll alot of racism going on today and alot of those black comedians may not even have a chance on another station but BETT will give them a chance

Actually, there ARE Caucasian people on BET sometimes, but that's beside the point. I think it's great that the owner of the station found a niche and filled it. Smart entrepreneur.

Unfortunately, it probably WOULD be considered racist if someone made WET (but there's always CMT ;-)).

Yes it would be called Racism if there was a WET. Also, you hear all these black comedians making racial jokes about whites and others, but a white comedian cannot do that. Stuff like this is unfortunately part of what keeps racism going in this country.

there are white people on that network sometimes and most of TV is for the entertainment of whites so a WET would be pointless and if anything comedy central is WET with a different name.
