Oh god...this is how disease gets spread, bad ink given, and us real artists make more money. If he has not apprenticed, don't buy him a kit. Self taught tattoo artist are not that well accepted in the profession. If he wants to work in a shop one day and tells them he is self taught, there goes a job right out the window because he most likely will have to be totally retaught. Most people who are self taught develop really bad habits that have to be corrected by true artists, and most cut corners on sterilization to the point of spreading disease. If he really wants to tattoo, find him an apprenticeship somewhere as a Christmas present, I promise you it would be a better gift, and when he is ready to start tattooing on people his mentor will let him know and aid in buying a quality machine. Anywhere that sells to people without them having to provide a business license for the studio and a copy of their permit, is gonna be a crap supplier.

This is NOT a good idea.....unless you are planning on spreading Hepatitis, Aids or Staph Skin infections. Tattooing ISN'T like drawing on paper. You can't erase it and start over. What are you planning on doing your crappy tattoos on...... YOURSELF? That's a great idea. Maybe when everbody sees what crappy ink you have, they will think twice about letting you touch them. Personally I think its a bad idea. Why don't you buy a home surgery kit instead and open an operating room........This makes about as much sense as buying a tattoo machine. Listen to Tatt_Bratt. There is a reason that she is one of the top rated answerers in this category. She knows what she is talking about.

You could spend upwards of $5000 for a good setup and it still wouldn't help you do any better starting out. Apprenticeship is the way to go.

You would have to have ALL disposable "crap" as you call it because you don't know what you are doing, you don't have an autoclave, and you are going to cross-contaminate. (Never mind the fact you will be giving sh***y-as**d tattoos)
Generally tattoo apprentices are guided by their mentors as to how to select equipment.
You also need barrier film, clip cord cover, plastic aprons, examination gloves, plastic backed work area protection, sharps container....I can go on forever. It will cost you hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Then you have to decide where to set this all up or do you intend on becoming a kitchen table scratcher?
Yeah, that's what I thought.

make your own tattoo kit here is how use a moter from an old VCR ,shell of a pen, guitar string, old tooth brush with a flat back, old spice deodorant, your own designs trace with a pen several times ,get ink from Michael's Craft store. now take the tooth brush glue the moter to it and the pen on the other side at ached the guitar string to the moter and run it down the pen long enough so when you turn the motor on it goes in and out like a noddle now take the deodorant put some on the part of your body you going to tattoo get your drawing place and hold in till print appears take the tattoo machine deep in the ink and trace. my husband made one and put tattooes on me and I did the same for him practice makes perfect good luck I hope it helps
