Is it comfortable enough for like a 48 hour trip from Perth-Adelaide?

I did the trip from Adelaide to Perth about 2 months ago and if you are wanting good sleep for the two nights, forget it (unless you take sleeping tablets). But then again for the price diffference I would most certainly take the day nighter if I was to go by train again considering it is only 2 nights. The train does also have a lounge car which has really cumfy seats, so if you do go for it, I would recommending sitting there rather than your assigned seat for the time when you are not sleeping. Also that gives you a chance to meet people and if your chatting with other travellers the time goes much quicker. All in all I would have to say I had a really good trip (except for minimal sleep on the first night, on the second night lots of people got off at Kalgoolie so I got two seats to myself).

One last point, if you are going to be taking the train, make sure you get a YHA card, anyone can get it (no matter your age) and if you are taking the day nighter the price goes from about $400 to about $250. Well worth it since 1 year for the card is $50.

Happy train tripping

No. Imagine hell on earth and double it. The Indian Pacific is a great train but only if you have a sleeper. It is probably marginally better than the bus in the daynighter seats, only because you can walk around, but there isn't much in it.

Well it depends on your idea of comfort- I wouldn't go without some cushions and even then, you'd want to be a good sleeper. I LOVE trains, but that is a hell of a long trip, and while it is OK, you can get a bad seat. I've done that trip as far as Port Pirie a few tiems, and was very eager to get off.
