I've heard it said by some people in chat that they believe that it is the collective thoughts of many people that cause things, such as 9-11, to happen (The thinking here would be that a collective fear of terrorism caused this).

Personally, I think it's ridiculous, but I thought it would make a good question, since some do believe it.

LOL Gypsy Priest!!

Carl Jung popularized this sociological theory of the collective conscientiousness. You might want to look him up if you want more info.

It's poppycock and balderdash, with a hint of rubbish thrown in.

Somebody is mixing concepts - there is a collective unconscious, that is the repository of the human psyche and its symbols, and there is a theory of an M-field or morphogenic field that connects all members of a species. The M-field theory is often called the Hundredth Money theory. It's the idea that if a certain number within a species knows something, that knowledge is available to all members. Rupert Sheldrake is well known for his work in this area. Do some reading on the subject before you dismiss it.

9/11 was caused by neglect and greed - it has nothing to do with the group mind of humanity. It has everything to do with having criminals in the White House.

No. But I know for a fact there is a "collective cabal" that influences governments and thus causes world events.

As an atheist, I would have to say that the idea is pure sewer substance.

But I was saved by God himself and convinced of the truth concerning Jesus Christ and the offering he made on our behalf. Now, as a borne again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, I would have to say that the idea is pure sewer substance.

If it were true, I think that Vicarious Jade has the right answer.

Sort of. 911 relates to that I think. I am from Vietnam, and the way it seems to me is that the religious views of the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish people are very similar. A collective consciousness of discontent erupted because they try to crush those similarities.

I do believe in the collective UNconciousness though.
