Let me clarify for you and everyone else because I have taken Parasitology before.
Most worms are large enough to see, however, they live in the intestines. They have mouthparts and they attach themselves to your dog's intestinal lining and suck blood/nutrients/proteins from him/her. When they are mature enough, they lay eggs, and this is what is shed in the poop. When the vet takes a fecal sample and puts it under the microscope, they are looking for EGGS, not microscopic worms. Some exceptions are rare kinds of tapeworms that are very hard to see with the naked eye.
You will probably never see the worms in the poop- why? Because when your vet gives your dog a dewormer, it kills the worms, then they are digested, and pooped out like normal poop. Not all dewormers work this way, but most do. So even if the worms are dead, you will not see them in the stool.
One exception to this "never see anything" rule is tapeworms. Tapeworms are in segments, and when the very bottom segment becomes very full of eggs, it breaks off and it is shed in the poop. Owners report seeing "rice" in the stool- these area actually tapeworm segments that are full of eggs being shed in the poop.
The dead worms in your dog's stool are either masked by poop, or are digested and you aren't going to be able to see them. Signs of worm infestation are diarrhea, weight loss, or a bloated belly in puppies. The best way to check and see if the deworming medicine worked is to take a sample of stool back to the vet after a few weeks, have them look for eggs again, and this will tell you if the worms are gone.

They look for eggs too, in a stool sample that's been smeared on a glass slide and put under a microscope. If they see eggs, your dog has worms. Give him the medication to get rid of them.

You won't always see worms if they have them.. It's obviously a common misconception of people... A stool sample is required to find out for sure if your dog has worms.. Normally unless a dog is infested, you won't even realize your dog has worms.

Unless your a surgeon and went inside your dogs heart yourself then you wont see them. Get the facts from your vet. Such as how long has the dog had them approx. Whats the best treatment? Its going to be expensive if your dog needs treatment but make sure you check into this. Heartworm can lead to a very slow death.

To stop your dog from getting worms, you must give them a wormer tablet every 3 months.

If you do this your dog should never get worms.
