+ Mass +

The Mass:
+ Is the principal sacramental celebration of the Catholic Church
+ Was established by Jesus at the Last Supper
+ Renews the mystery of our salvation through participation in the sacrificial death and glorious resurrection of Christ

In the Mass, we:
+ Gather as one family
+ Admit our sins, ask God for forgiveness, and the saints and each other for prayer and support
+ Glorify God
+ Listen to, ponder and reflect on His Word from the Scriptures
+ Pray for the Church, the world, those in need, and ourselves
+ Celebrate the Eucharist (Holy Communion) in obedience with Christ's command to "do this in memory of me."
+ Are sent out into the world to love and serve the Lord and one another

It is called "Mass" (from the Latin missa) because of the "mission" or "sending" with which the liturgical celebration concludes.

For more information, see the General Instruction of the Roman Missal: http://www.usccb.org/liturgy/current/chapter2.shtml#sect3a

+ High Mass, Low Mass +

The terms High Mass and Low Mass are not used with the modern Catholic Mass in the language of the local people.

Back when all Masses were in Latin, a High Mass was mostly sung and a Low Mass was mostly spoken.

+ With love in Christ.

Cathy is wrong on the definition of High and Low Mass. However she is right on the part about the Eucharist.

The Mass is what we call our worship service. There are many Rites (the way the Mass is said) in the Catholic Church because of the different cultures around the world. The Latin Rite or Roman Rite is the most common Rite and definately the most common in America. The Latin Rite has two forms, the Novus Ordo and the Tridentine. The Novus Ordo is the norm now. You are looking at a schedule for the Tridentine Mass or commonly called the Old Latin Mass. This was the only Mass that was celebrated before 1962 but after that we changed the normal form of the Mass to the Novus Ordo, meaning "New Order". In the Novus Ordo, the Mass is usually all in English or the local language. The Novus Ordo can be said with some Latin in it but not all in Latin. The Tridentine Mass is said all in Latin except for the Kyrie, which is in Greek in both forms. The priest has the option of repeating the readings and Gospel in English or the local language so those who don't have a missal can understand the readings and Gospel. A usual Tridentine missal has Latin on one page, and English on the next page (or half a page is Latin and half a page is English) saying the same as the Latin so that you can follow along with the English. The priest also says the Homily or Sermon in English or the local language if he decides to do one.

BOTH THE HIGH AND LOW MASSES ARE TRIDENTINE MASSES, THEREFORE, BOTH ARE ALL IN LATIN. The Low Mass is the usual Mass of the Tridentine form. The High Mass is the Mass that has lots of singing in it even while the priest is saying the Mass. Of course the singing stops when the Consecration is near and during it because it is a liturgical abuse in both forms of Tridentine and Novus Ordo to have anything else going on during the Consecration. Both the Low Mass and the High Mass are very beautiful Masses and the singing makes the High Mass more beautiful. They are also very reverent unlike the way some Novus Ordo Masses are said today. It seems like the Novus Ordo is loosing the reverence it deserves with such horrible things as "clown masses", "halloween masses", and even the "teen masses" get out of hand with the teens coming up around the altar and the music. Some holy priests do still preserve the reverence that the Novus Ordo Mass once had and I am very thankful to them. However, you never have any of these abuses in the Tridentine Masses and I thank God for that as well. Thanks to Pope Benedict XVI, the Diocese priests can now say the Tridentine Mass (before only priests from the Fraternity of St. Peter and a couple other orders could) without permission from the bishop.

Sorry for some of my spelling... the spell check wasn't working. The EWTN link explains the recent decision of Pope Benedict XVI to broaden the use of the Tridentine form. The 2 other links explain the Tridentine Mass. Hope this helped. These are great sites. Please check em out!

Low Mass Vernacular ( local language) generally
High Mass, Latin generally

there is not "medium' Mass.

But Catholic Low Mass, is considered more High Church then Protestant services (this is from a Methodist Minister, it is not a negative comment) so I guess Low Mass could be medium Church. The low/high refers to the level of formality and tradition followed in the service. (or you can all it pomp and circumstance).

Technically a low Mass does have music (songs), but there is no cantoring (singing) of the word or liturgy, al;though they did use to sing the Low Mass too.

EDIT" to the person beneath me communion is available at ALL Masses, it is not Mass without Consecration of the Eucharist. And communion is given out even without Mass in Communion Services. There is NO Catholic worship without the Eucharist.

EDITII: K-9 I am not wrong, unless you are a pre V2 Catholic who does not accept any Mass that is not in Latin. But then by definition you are a schismatic and not Catholic. In which case you would take EWTN over a Notre Dame education in the liturgy. The new document Summorum Pontificum on the liturgy does not put ALL Masses back into Latin, despite what people wish to think. It simply allows for it on a broader basis. And it is not a Tridentine Mass unless it is in Latin, which is exactly why it is called HIGH Mass, becuase it has the most formality and tradition of liturgy.

Low Mass (sometimes called Missa Privata) is Mass said by a priest without music or incense and without the assistance of a deacon and subdeacon. The term may refer specifically to a Tridentine Mass said by a priest with the assistance of one or more servers, instead of a deacon and subdeacon and other ministers, the most common form of Mass before 1969.

High Mass is just the opposite

Overnite adoration is when you sit and pray at the tabernacle

On Good Friday we venerate the cross, which means we go up and kiss it, or touch it. There is distribution of communion but no consecration. In other words the Host that has been reserved is distributed, but no new consecration is done. This is the only day in the Church year in which Mass is not celebrated.

'Mass' is the word Catholics use to describe the religious ceremony and ritual in which they participate as members of the church. It includes worship of god, prayer, a homily (sermon), hymns, etc.

In the Protestant churches it is called a 'Service', and is basically the exact same thing with slightly different rituals, hymns and prayers..

I'm not sure what the difference between 'Low' and 'High' Mass is, I haven't heard the terms used before, *** removed as incorrect ***.

At the link below, you can watch an actual Mass take place.

Cheers :-)

EDITED TO SAY: Thanks to the other answerers, I was wrong in my guess about Low and High, they have the correct information for you :-)

Low Mass is a said mass (no singing)

High Mass / solemn : is a sung Mass (celebrant sings, gregorian chants, latin motets, recessional and processional hymns)

All night adoration is the exposition of the blessed sacrament from usually 7pm - 7am / first Friday which I will attend tonight after work.

God bless,

Mass is another name for the Catholic church service. A low Mass does not have music or incense it is just a service you can go and listen to the word.
