What does this mean, practically-speaking? I really like this guy and he knows it, yet nothing's happening. Someone advised that I be more of a challenge... does this mean be more aloof? Or... just not communicate with him for a while? (We email frequently and seem to have good chemistry, and he seems happy to see me in person, but it's not moving beyond the "friend" thing-- in 3 months, and I'm about to give up.)

Talk to other guys around him. He'll start talking to you more. When he does just be friendly; not real excited or totally aloof. Just be polite. It'll drive him crazy wondering why you don't like him. He'll keep chasing you. When he asks you out say yes the way you would if your parents asked you out to dinner. You wouldn't act all excited and crazy to go out with mom and dad, act the same way with him. It's called active disinterest. You're talking to him, but you're not acting crazy about him.

Don't take the advice of "ignore him." You might just fall off his radar. "Active" - talking, communicating, being around; "Disinterest" - not needy, not super excited, not showing interest. Active Disinterest.

Well, playing hard to get may or may not work. If the guy really likes you, doing so will probably push him away. If the guy is shy especially, he will not ask you out anytime soon. Some guys may feel inclined to jump the gun and ask a person out before she gets taken, but this is rare, as they usually feel unsure if that person likes them at all.

You should talk to other guys, but make more of an effort for that one guy you like, and make it obvious to them that you like him. Make sure he knows you like him without being too clingy and desperate. If he genuinely likes you, he will most likely ask you because he is sure. Guys like to ask girls out only after they know for sure that person likes them back.

Playing hard to get can back fire. So be careful with that game. Playing hard to get means being interested for awhile then for a period of time not.

I would just ask him if would be interested in being more than friends.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe you are sending a stop sign now try being a little more open and available ! The 2 worst attitudes are hard to get and easy and sleazy !

hard to get translates to me as not interested ---- if he has not done anything maybe he is just cautious and not sure if you will respond favourably --- maybe let him know you are interested in moving beyond friends --- how you do that is a question in itself the only answer i would be able to give is be direct --- its the only way i could be sure ----- best wishes

Why do you want to play hard to get? Rather you could drop a hint that you are interested, like say "did you watch that movie?, its supposed to be really nice, i really would love to watch it, all my frnds are busy etc..."
if he is interested he'll want to take you.

Don't let him know that you're interested, basically playing mind games with him, like give him subtle hints but then change your game. Just remember, nobody can read your mind, therefore it isn't very trustworthy.
