I signed the lease contract for the studio flat before I got to see the cleaned and fixed one. Previous resident lived there for over 10 yrs and this place looked like someone was dead in there.. It had a strong smoking odor and closet was so old fashion it did not have a mirror. But this will all change accordin to the manager.
So my question is, I absolutely do not want to live on that same carpet. How would I check if the carpet has been replaced?
What things can I do to see the the carpet is new and the odor has NOT been covered with new paints and etc..

i think it should be easy to tell whether the carpet is worn or not. if used there should be newer looking spots where furniture was sitting before..

The old carpet will have traffic wear patterns...we walk in the same place everytime due to furniture placement, so those areas are more packed down. Steam cleaning will refresh those spots, but get down and look at the carpet fibers where you would normally walk, vs carpet fibers by the wall. If it's the old carpet, you'll see the difference. The fibers by the wall (where no one walks) will still look new, the ones in a walk path, will look crushed and frayed. Steam cleaning will lift some of the spots where the furniture was sitting, but look and see if there are any heavy indentations in the carpet that it didn't get out....like from a heavy sofa or entertainment center.

Also, since whoever lived there before was a smoker...if old carpet and pad is on the floor, the apartment will still have a smokey smell. Carpet and pad hold smoke like you wouldn't believe, and a steam cleaning isn't getting rid of that smell.

Because of the crackdown of VOC's(volitale organic compounds) new carpet doesn't have the strong smell that it used to. So, go by visual inspection.

If you really want to scrutinize it, pull it up and check out the backing. Carpet cleaners can get stains out of the carpet but they don't clean all the way down to the backing. You shouldn't have to pull up very much to be able to tell whether it's new or 10 years old. Choose a spot where a table or couch would go -- because there were more likely to be spills in those areas that would go through to the backing.

Tip: DON'T pull up the carpet along a seam or near any tack strips. Instead, pull it up from along a wall edge. It'll be much easier to put back in place when you're done looking.

If the old carpet is in the apartment you should notice wear spots where furniture was set like in front of easy chairs, or divans stools, under tables,etc.. A new caarpet should have full even look throughout the rug. If it is new it will also have an odor caused by the chemicals in the backing of the rug. so long as there are no stains, the surface isn't worn, it should suffice.

Older carpet will have wear marks, where the path from walking was. New carpet also has a strong smell, and paint won't cover it up.

Check if it is the same as the room next to you or the floor below. If the same its highly likely it is the old carpet.
good luck on your move.

MOST NEW CARPETS WILL HAVE A NEW CARPET SMELL; LIKE A NEW CAR.
IT APPEARS THAT YOU SAW THE OLD CARPET AND BEING THAT IT IS TEN YEARS OLD+, I DON'T THINK THE LANDLORD WOULD BE ABLE TO EXACTLY MATCH IT.
OR YOU COULD JUST ASK.

one good way to check and see if it is new or old is to do this............
when carpet has been layed recently and no furniture or much traffic has been moved through there, you will,in most cases, see small imprints along at least two sides of the wall along the baseboard.......this is from the stretchers and the kickers they use........they look like small holes........most of the time the installers will not rub them out and let time wear it away..............just check it out along the walls and see what you see............................
