999 is the emergency number in the UK specifically.

112 is the emergency number for mobile phones everywhere in the world (Yes, even in the USA)

In the US, from a cell phone, you can dial either 911 or 112.

In many countries (Including the UK), 112 has been set up to work as an emergency number from landlines as well as mobile phones.

In the US, 112 works as a '911' number from landlines in "some" places, but not all.

It works as a "911" number on all VOIP lines - such as Packet 8, Vonage, Comcast voice etc.
