Best Buy has a no questions asked policy. I have used their protection plan for both my ps2 and my xbox 360. The ps3 is still running great, however.

strangely enough the best people to go to are sony themselves (if the warranty was taken out with them) if the unit develops a fault they will simply replace it where some shops might ummm and aahhh a bit. i got mine from littlewoods and bought extra warranty because i have it on good authority that if it breaks down the chances are they will just replace it rather than send it to a techie. i did a lot of research on the ps3 before i bought it (£500 is a lot of money to spend on a console-so it should be spent wisely). and i don't download any firmwares or link it to the internet in any way-it is treated purely as a games console (i don't even use the blu-ray player) and past experience has told me that this should extend the units life somewhat-some movies can be three hours long-if you watch two or three of these a week on top of gaming thats a lot of punishment for a new format to handle. these things do break down. but i have never encountered a break-down which i beleive is largely down to adhering to the tips above.
