Oils are fats and any fats in excess can be fattening, yes. However, dietery fats are healthy and necessary, and some oils are certainly better than others (ie olive oil, flax seed and fish oils). However, all fats contain 9 calories per gram so they're calorie dense and you do have to be congizant of how much you're getting. People should get at least 20% of their daily calories from healthy fats.

You betcha. One pat of butter is 100 calories. If you are on a 1200 calorie diet' and had 6 pats of butter, that would be half of your total calorie intake.
Be sure to read the nutrition panel on purchased products like mayonnaise, peanut butter, and the like.
