The word apparently is on the street that everyone's family tree is on the web. That is bunk.
Now, you might find some of your family lines but it must be verified. There are websites, free and paid. The information in family trees are user submitted. Most of the information is not documented or poorly documented. Even when you see the same information repeatedly by many different submitters, that is no guarantee it is correct. A lot of people copy without verifying. The information should only be used as CLUES as to where to get the documentation, not as fact. Also if someone has for instance Family Tree Maker and a subscription to Genealogy.Com, they can easily merge other people's trees in to their tree and then upload the merged tree into Ancestry.Com, Genealogy.Com, FamilySearch.org or Genealogy.Com itself. Unfortunately, Genealogy.Com encourages people to do that and as a result many people have a lot of unverified info. There are errors in family trees on the internet.
Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org are two free sites.
You should first get as much info from your living family as possible, particularly your senior members. Tape them if they will let you. It might be they are confused on some
things but what might seem to be insignificant story telling might be very significant. People who do this state they go back a few years after doing research and listen to the tape again and hear things they didn't hear the first time around.
Your public library might have a subscription to Ancestry.Com you can use.
Actually you should check out the resources at your public library. Ancestry.Com has lots of records on line and seems to be getting more all the time. They have all the U.S. censuses through 1930. The 1940 and later are not available to the public yet.
They have U.K. censuses also.
A Family History Center at a Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church has lots of records and they let the public use their resources.
They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons. In Salt Lake City, they have the world's largest genealogical collection. Their Family History Centers can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal fee.
I have never had them to try and convert me or send their missionaries by to ring my doorbell. I haven't heard of them doing that to anyone else either.
Eventually, it will cost. You need vital records, births, marriages and deaths. Now in the U. S. each state has its own laws as to who and when a person can obtain birth and death certificates. Also, in many states, governing bodies(state, county, city) did not start recording vital information until the first quarter of the 20th century. Once they did, a lot of people who were born at home or died at home did not get recorded. Most of these records have parent information including mother's maiden name. The application for a social security number that I have seen and the death certificates have both parents' names including mother's maiden name and their places of birth. Social Security went into effect January 1, 1935. If a person was drawing social security at time of death and on their own social security number, they will most likely be on the Social Security Death Index. Rootsweb and FamilySearch.org(free sites) and Ancestry.Com have the SSDI.
Before states, counties or cities started recording vital info, you can turn to church records.
You will need courthouse records, wills, deeds, etc.
Genealogy is not cheap. It does require documentation. You start with yourself and work back.
Good Luck!

Ask around your family and see if anyone knows of anyone in the family who has already spent several decades researching your family. Then write or call that person and tell them you are interested in seeing their work. Most family historians or genealogists like to share their work with family members so they will probably let you have a look for free.
Of course, in order to have YOUR tree, you will need to do this for both sides of your family.
.
If one or both sides of your family doesn't have it's very own historian and you are willing to take a course (or read a couple of books) on Genealogy and invest your personal time & money into tracking your family yourself..your family will probably give you the job.
.
There is not some huge database somewhere in cyberspace where every family tree for every living person is stored.
.
There are many sites on-line where you can view the family tree research of others, BUT not every family has had their family researched, much less had their tree posted on-line. In fact, only a small % of families actually have trees posted on-line.
.
Not all family trees posted on-line have been properly researched either.
Some people, (who just want to see their names on-line I guess) post "patch-work" trees...trees they have patched together from bits & pieces of other people's work. Usually these people have done very little actual research to confirm the facts themselves, so the trees they post are usually full of errors.
Any time someone brags they've been "reseacrching" their tree for five years and have collected info on 15,000 family members...it's a patchwork tree.

There is not any internet web site that has a distinctive household tree except any person has researched and uploaded it. If you desire to view my ancestors and knowledge on them and don't seem to be inclined to visit the library and entry Ancestry there you'll ought to do the study. If nobody has uploaded a pedigree chart to your household you'll nonetheless ought to do the study your self.

You usually can't unless someone you're related to wrote it down. Ask your relatives. If not, start a family tree so that your decndents don't have simalar questions about geneaology.
