Put up signs around the house to identify things. Remind them often of what is happening, who is who, what is what. Be patient. Don't get upset at them. They aren't trying to cause other people problems. It is frustrating, but they can't help that.

Depends, in what way they lost their memory. Brain injury, you just deal with it an hope the brain recovers, or make new memories. Stroke, again the brain can at least partially recover and new memories can be build. Alzheimer's and Dementia, I work in a nursing home, there are some medications out there that will slow the process. I find it very sad when family just dump their loved ones and due to guilt claim they can't deal with seeing them that way. I know it is hard, but I think stimulating the brain keeps them going and although they might not remember everything and will forget you just visited last week, their personalities are still in there.
We post signs for some of our residents in the rooms to remind them of some things, don't take things they say personally, if they get upset about not remembering try to redirect them. Keep your sentences short and simple. Treat them as adults, for some reason they do remember they are one. Watch your body language they pick up on it. Hope some of this helps.

The one who said "with compassion" has it right. but some of the others are a-- h---- that deserve to get Alzheimer's.

That being said, depending on the type of memory loss, the caretaker must patiently use gentle reminders whenever necessary. The reminders should be as brief as possible. Most people with memory loss don't need or want a lot of detail in the reminders they get.

Absolutely DO NOT treat someone with memory loss like they have mental retardation!
DO NOT treat an adult with memory loss like a child!
These are highly insulting and will quickly undermine any benefit you can give them.

dont think of it as a curse.. more so, think of it as a sign to start over, even though their memory is gone it isnt the end of the world as long as they are still with you..

:D
