One problem with plastic is that it's tough to clean it completely free of oil, and oil will make your meringue fail (or at least not be as successful). That's why it's important not to have a speck of yolk in the whites, that's a source of oil, and will make the whipping much harder, or impossible.

Copper bowls have an added benefit of lending a copper ion to the meringue, which helps it build even higher. At least try to find a ceramic bowl or glass dish of some sort, it'll work better.

Foil would come in contact with the beaters and make the meringue unusable. Metal or glass should be used...if you haven't a bowl, how about a large pan? If it will hold at least twice the volume of the eggs you are using, it should work.

Do not use the foil method unless you want to destroy a bunch of useful eggwhites. Go spend the ten dollars and get yourself a stainless steel bowl or a glass one. In plastic the eggwhites also absorb some of the residues in the plastic like oils and such and make your eggwhites incapable of becoming a meringue where as glass or steel they do not hold oils so they can be free of any residue. Making for perfect bowls of meringue time and time again.

with all the vigorous whipping, you'll just tear the foil. metal works best, but it is possible to make a meringue in a plastic bowl. it will take you longer to whip to proper consistency though.

The reason you must use metal or glass is because the bowl needs to be cold. Foil won't do the trick, as plastic won't stay cool.
