Ok so my brown belt karate testt is this saturday and I'm hella freaked out about it. First off its gonna be like 4 1/2-5 hours long. Its gonna be intense condititoning, pushups running etc. and then forms and techniques. Im scared to death pretty much. I don't think i can handle thst much. I was very relieved howevever on founding out that it was not 7 hours long. Anyway... I have my forms down pretty well, except for I'm totally spaced out on my techniques. I should know 1-10, and I only have like 1-5 commited to memory. Well they'll go over it during the test, but I am TERRIBLE at retaining new information thtatt fast. I'll probably gett yelled at and stuff. That and the intetnse conditioning is what I'm really afriad of. Damn, you don't know how much I was this to be over already. Should I eat breakfast? It startst at 9 am and i dont wanna have to worry about throwing up. But yeah.. any advice on my situation? And I'm going to a concert so is bed by like 12 ok? thx

Well, I can sympathise. I did my 3rd kyu brown-belt grading in April this year and I also thought it was terrible. I suffer badly from nerves but the adrenaline kicks in and somehow you get through it. You may end up being surprised by how many of your techniques that you remember, I think that you are also referring to ippon/kihon gumite techniques?

You really should get to bed as early as possible and try to eat something before the grading, I know that it's hard to.

If I could do the grading (successfully) at 36 years old, then I'm sure that you will be just fine. Good luck!

I don't know why your freaking out it's only a test and 4- 5 hour that's it, Ill trade you my test is two days, one day written, one day physical, I remember my brown belt test OH I could not wait to get in there, I loved every minute of it and passed with flying colors, I did get stuck right at the end when my Sensei asked me to break a board, I thought ah no problem, then he handed me the board, so I thought about it and drove my hand right through it, that was the first time I broke a board like that, you will be fine just relax and focus on what you are doing and only on what you are doing, you do have time to think about the Kata's and techniques before you do them so focus, hope that helped you out and good luck with the grading let us know how you did, Sempei.

Well I would say that you are right on track for doing everything you can to fail this test. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it this late so go and enjoy the concert. I would let my instructor know that I am not ready this time and see what he says. Make sure you are prepared the next time and certainly don't go out late the night before. One of the reasons a test is longer is to tax you mentally and physically as much as possible. That way your instructor can see if you lose control, quality of technique, along with speed and power to a lesser extent as you grow tired. In short you get a better feel for the true essence of the student and their abilities and skill. Hopefully your instructor will just chalk it up as a mistake due to lack of experience and maturity on your part and give you a stern warning to be ready next time and not make you wait to long. You can make this negative into a positive if next time you are prepared and show him that you have learned an important lesson about all this.

Bed by 12 is a little foolish. Bed by 9 or 10 is a little more appropriate.

But anyway, if you've been cleared to test by your instructor, they obviously think you've already 'passed' the test. A belt is not something you wear, it is something you become. And at that, you don't get the belt until after you have already proven you ARE that belt - you don't get your brown belt and then become a brown belt, you get your brown belt because you are a brown belt.

So CHILL OUT!!! Have fun and relax. Worrying won't change the test, but it will negatively affect the outcome.

2-5 hours seems about average to me, my brown belt was 3 hours in a heat wave. I puked a couple of times but I got through it. My black belt will be held over 2 days, 5 hours each now thats intense. Just go through your katas in your mind the day before get plenty of sleep and relax. It might not be such a good idea to go to this concert as it will leave you tired and hard of hearing.

Finally when I take part in a grading, I look at it as chance to show off my skills. you know you can do it so 'DO IT'!

First relax. Now you need to practice your techniques and forms, until they are all smooth. Eat a small breakfast, nothing heavy, and drink lots of water.
